Hopi “hope-ee“ “peaceful person” “civilized person”

Northwestern Arizona- The Hopi Indians are now located on the Black Mesa in Arizona near an area referred to as the Painted Desert. Historically the Hopi inhabited northern Arizona and parts of Utah, Colorado and New Mexico. Today the Hopi Native American Reservation lands are located on approximately 2,000,000 acres of land in Arizona.

What type of climate did the Hopi Native Americans live in? What kinds of plants grow in this region?

The climate in The Painted Desert area is very warm and dry with very little precipitation. The average yearly rainfall was just over 10 inches. Wild plants, corn, beans, cotton, squash, gourds,

What did the Hopi Native American eat?

What did the Hopi eat? Hopi Native Americans were farmers. They grew crops such as corn (over 20 verities), squash, beans and pumpkins. In addition to growing crops for food they also grew cotton and tobacco. The Hopi also hunted rabbit, deer and native birds.

Where did the Hopi Native American live??

Hopi people lived in adobe houses, which are multi- story house complexes made of adobe (clay and straw baked into hard bricks) and stone. Each adobe unit was home to one family, similar to a modern apartment. Hopi people used ladders to reach the upstairs apartments. A Hopi adobe house can contain dozens of units and was often home to an entire extended clan.

What type of clothing did the Hopi Native Americans wear?

The Hopi Native American women wore un-dyed cotton cloth dresses with an embroidered belt. The men wore a un-dyed strait sleeved or sleeves shirt made of deer skin. Both men and women wore moccasins on their feet made of deer skin. Hopi Native American cloths are made of sheep and buffalo skin. They hand made all their clothes. They used all types of animals for their clothes and shoes.

Katchina Dolls Hopi Native Americans carved small dolls that represented the multiple gods of their religion. These dolls were carved from a single piece of cottonwood-root with decorations and clothing added latter.
