WHAT IS THE STUDENT LITERACY COUNCIL??? SLC was created in order to promote literacy, not only in our school, but in our community! PERFECT FOR READERS WHO WANT TO COMPETE THE BATTLE CONSISTS OF QUESTIONS FROM 10 BOOKS COMPETE AGAINST OTHER SCHOOLS WITHIN THE COUNTY IN TEAMS OF FIVE

BOOK CLUB SMALL GROUP, MORE RELAXED THAN BATTLE A BOOK IS CHOSEN A MONTH BEFORE THE MEETING MEETS MONTHLY TO DISCUSS THE BOOK, WATCH A MOVIE, AND EAT DINNER. PERFECT FOR THOSE WHO ENJOY READING AND DESIRE TO HAVE A SERIOUS, IN-DEPTH DISCUSSION ABOUT BOOKS.

LIBRARY CLUB Does not involve reading Perfect for those who wish to help out in the library! Shelving books, shelf reading, working on the display case, and assisting the librarians with anything they might need help with. Earn volunteer hours when you work OUTSIDE of school hours. Display cases are done monthly and are a great way to earn quick volunteer hours! (Note: Every member is eligible – and encouraged - to work on the display case)

NOVEMBER - THANKSGIVING MOVIE NIGHT POTLUCK NOVEMBER 20 TH (HELP WITH OUR ANNUAL BOOK DRIVE) SIMILAR TO THE PREVIOUS MOVIE NIGHT (ADMISSION CAN BE PAID BY GIVING BOOKS) THERE WILL ALSO BE A POTLUCK! WE’LL ASK MEMBERS TO BRING IN ANY DISH THEY LIKE! INVITE STUDENTS FROM NEIGHBORING SCHOOLS (ROCK RIDGE, BROAD RUN, ETC.)

SECRET SANTA! ASSIGNED NOVEMBER 11TH $20 LIMIT ON GIFTS, CAN BE HAND MADE AS WELL:) GIFT EXCHANGE DECEMBER 14TH

REACH OUT AND READ! THE REACH OUT AND READ PROGRAM PARTNERS WITH VARIOUS MEDICAL CENTERS IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA AND ALLOWS PEOPLE TO ADOPT CENTERS. BWHS SLC HAS OFFICIALLY ADOPTED HEALTHWORKS FOR NOVA!! WE WILL BUILD THEIR WAITING ROOM WHICH WILL INCLUDE A SMALL LIBRARY FOR CHILDREN AND PARENTS IN THE HEALTH CLINIC. WE HOPE TO INCLUDE DONATED BOOKS, A BOOKSHELF, MAGAZINES, AND TOYS FOR THE CHILDREN! THE BEST PART, THIS HOSPITAL IS FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE STRUGGLING FINANCIALLY, SO WE’LL BE GIVING BACK TO OUR COMMUNITY!

FUNDRAISERS & THE BOOK DRIVE TWO MAJOR FUNDRAISERS: BAKE SALE AND ROSES WE WILL BE HOLDING OUR ANNUAL BOOK DRIVE (WE’VE DONATED 3,000+ BOOKS!) COLLECTION BOXES IN BRAMBLETON DOOR TO DOOR COLLECTIONS (MAYBE DURING THE HOLIDAYS?) DISNEY THEMED READING EVENT FOR CHILDREN! WE’LL DRESS UP A FEW OF OUR MEMBERS AS DISNEY CHARACTERS AND INVITE CHILDREN TO BE READ TO BY THEIR FAVORITE DISNEY CHARACTERS. ADMISSION WILL BE 3-5 DONATED BOOKS!
