Presentation transcript:

How do we communicate? Can you understand what people mean when you don't know their language? Have you ever had to communicate with someone without using words? How did you do it? What happened? What are other ways to help people understand you? Harvard study on communication: 38% is tone, %55 is visual (body language/ facial) 7% is the words we use

When you were little... First, you saw......and listened Then you immitated sounds Then you understood meanings And finally you spoke words and sentences

First you see... Watch this clip - silently -- China What time of year is it? What is happening? What is the relationship between the characters? How does the tall guy feel at the end?

...then you hear... Watch this clip again What are the characters' names? What gifts do they give each other? Whose autograph is it? What does the tall guy want to do with the napkin? How do the girl and the short guy feel about each other?

...now learn the words Work together to fill in the gaps in the handout Discuss what you think the difficult words mean While you were writing, how much did you see? Don't use subtitles to learn English!

Practice saying them In groups of three, practice reading the dialogue Make sure each person gets to read each role Speak clearly

Communicate! Now, Get Up! Arrange your chairs like the seats in the scene Act out this scene Remember, 93% of communication is non-verbal Use your emotion!

TV Discussion Have you ever seen The Big Bang Theory before? Did you like this scene? Do you think it’s good for children to watch TV? Do you ever watch American TV shows? Which? Would you ever want to act in a show or play? Why or why not? What shows do you watch? Do you like to watch TV? Who are your favorite TV characters?
