By: Madison Halcovage

There were 10 pyramids of Giza. Three of these pyramids of Giza are a lot bigger than the other 7. The largest of all the pyramids had been built for King Khufu. It is called the Great Pyramid.

The Great Pyramid reached 481 feet tall before. Now it reaches 450 feet because some of the stones on the top are gone now. It is 756 feet long on each of the sides. Some experts say it took twenty years to build. They only worked on it for three months each year. This is the time where the Nile started to flood. This is one of the “ Seven Wonders of the Ancient World” that is still standing.

There was over 2 million stones that had been used on the Great Pyramid. These stones were limestone. The center of the pyramid was made from yellowish limestone. The interior chamber was built of really big blocks of granite. This pyramid was made with more then 2 million stone blocks as I said before.

Near the Great Pyramid are other things that were a part of this pyramids complex. Two of them are the other smaller pyramids. One built by Khafre Khufu’s son and one built by Menkaure. There is one more thing by the Great Pyramid. It is the Sphinx. Which is guarding the Great Pyramid because it is in front of the pyramid.

The Great Pyramid was robbed so we know little about Khufu’s life. Most of the outer layer stones are gone from the pyramid. Farm laborers built all the pyramids of Giza not just The Great Pyramid. The base of The Great Pyramid is about 13 acres. When the pyramid was done it was nearly half as tall as the Empire State building. The pyramid is about 4,500 years old. The base of the pyramid is equivalent to 12 football fields. The stones used to build the Great Pyramid could form a wall around France that was 10 feet high and 1 foot thick!

The Sphinx Guarding the Great Pyramid.

Here you can see how big the base is, how tall it is, and how many stones were used.
