Wind & Climate Wind – the horizontal movement of air. Low pressure – warm air rising. High pressure – cold air falling. Winds always blow from high pressure.
Weather Review. Air Masses Air Mass – A large body of air through which temperature and moisture are the same. Types 1. Continental – formed over land.
Wind Land heats faster than water.
EXPECTATION - Describe the relationship between the warming of the atmosphere of the Earth by the Sun and convection within the atmosphere and the oceans.
What causes winds? Uneven heating between the equatorial poles causes global winds. Since Earth is a sphere AND it is tilted on its axis, the sun’s energy.
Atmospheric movements We learned that energy is transferred from the Sun to the Earth creating convection currents. But, what type of currents???

WARM UP: What is a wind farm? How do they help the environment?
Warm air near the Earth’s surface rises and then cools as it goes back up. Convection happens on a global scale in the atmosphere and causes global winds,

DEMO What happens when you blow across the surface of the water? Make a sketch Know what happens when the cork is added, does it move across the pan? Why or why not

What is a wave? Transfer of energy (through any material) Most water waves are caused by wind Waves crashing into the shoreline can cause changes Large waves erode, small waves deposit sand This is one reason why some lakes have restrictions on the size of motorboats allowed in the lake

Regional Climates Rain- occurs more around big bodies of water as they heat up faster and cause convection currents (think of wearing a black shirt and how fast it heats up) Thunderstorms- caused by unstable atmospheric conditions where warm, moist air rises but doesn’t cool

Ocean currents Water move because of currents Caused by Wind Temperature differences Salinity differences Earth’s rotation

Surface Currents: Caused by wind and prevailing winds (always blow in the same direction) Convection Currents: Water is heating differentially (ie equators get more heat than poles) causing warm water to rise
