Presentation transcript:

The effectivness of different toothpastes on dentine hypersensitivity

 Short and sharp pain  Exposed dentine  Thermal, tactile, evaporative, osmotic or chemical stimuli  Cannot be ascribe to any other form of dental pathology 1

Dentine with open tubes  Toothbrush abrasion  Dietary erosion  Abfraction  Gingival retraction  Periodontal diseases 3  Enviromental conditions

We tryed to observe: The effectivness of the toothpastes The time of effectivness The placebo effect Non invasive treatment: The toothpaste

1.Sensodyne Repair & Protect  Contains Novamin (Calcium Sodium Phospholicate) 2.Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief  Contains Arginine and calcium carbonate

3.La Ligne Dent  Contains Fluoride 4.Maxam  Classic toothpaste without flouride Treatment principles: Obturate the dentinal tubes Desensitising the nerve ends

 40 pacients diagnosed with dentine hypersensitivity based on: Symptoms Differential diagnosis Divided in 4 groups, Group A : Colgate Pro-Relief containing Arginine Group B: Sensodyne containing Novamin Group C: La Ligne containing fluoride Group D: Maxam without fluoride Pacients were required to brush their teeth twice a day for a period of 4 weeks.

Every pacient completed a questionaire and evaluate the intensity of pain using a Visual Analogue Scale During the treatment,in every week was recorded a new note using VAS. No pain Moderate Unbearbable pain pain

Group A- ArginineGroup B- Novamin

Group C- Fluoride Group D- Maxam

Comparison between the effectivness of toothpastes 50% 40% 62% 50%

 The common individual who buys a toothpaste for his dentine hypersensitivity  The most expensive is not always the best

 Placebo effect : Therapeutic value 0% = feeling better = as well as aspirin as well = as morphine  Some aspects that must be considerated: Spontaneous healing with reparative dentine Enviromental conditions The answer of politness

 The most effective toothpaste over all is La Ligne containing Fluoride  Colgate Pro Argine containing Arginine and Calcium Carbonate – most powerful effect in a short time  The placebo effect plays a significant role in dentine hypersensitivity treatment
