25 SCA Board Meeting, 31 May 2011 Contribute a Collection to JISC MediaHub Primary audience -Learners, teachers and researchers at UK HE/FE Institutions Were keen to include more high-quality image, film and sound resources If you already have a web site describing each item of content - we can include your metadata If you have a collection of digital images, films or sounds you would like to contribute for educational use online - we may be able to include your content and metadata. If you are interested in contributing collection metadata or content then please let us know what content you hold, under what licence, and why you would like it included. What's in it for my collection? Increased exposure of your collection and more traffic to your site! Access to the basic search and browse service is open, so anyone can search for any item on which we hold metadata. We create a page for each item using the metadata you supply, and redirect to your site so users come to you for the original content. You remain in control of the original content on your site. Your collection description is included in the list of collections along with the terms of use (Optionally) We provide a feed to multiple other aggregators on your behalf, further increasing the exposure of your collection e.g. to search engines.list of collections Feedback on usage to help you improve your metadata for discoverability. An increased return on the investment you have already made in developing your collection. An enhanced experience for users, who can find items in your collection and link them to other collections' content.

26 SCA Board Meeting, 31 May 2011 Contribute a Collection to JISC MediaHub - 2 What practical steps do I need to take to include my collection if I want my metadata included in JISC MediaHub? If you already have a collection of images, films or sounds and a web site with a page describing each item of content then you're almost there. Your collection must also be licensed for use in education as the minimum - it's great if it's licensed for wider use. There are just 3 steps needed to include your collection: Get in touch with us in the first instance and let us know what content you hold, under what licence, and why you would like it to be included along with your contact details. We will then consider your content for inclusion and discuss options with you. You will then have to review the Content Providers Agreement and be willing to sign it. If you prefer not to provide a feed to other aggregators then you should choose to sign this agreement instead.Content Providers Agreementthis agreement We will then contact you to discuss the final step, which is to agree the technical process of harvesting your metadata. If you do not already have a web site with a page describing each item of content then we may still be able to include your collection.

27 SCA Board Meeting, 31 May 2011 Contribute a Collection to JISC MediaHub - 3 Are there any technical steps that I will need to take to include my metadata in JISC MediaHub? If you are already familiar with metadata harvesting and have an OAI-PMH server set up then you will just need to share the details as we can harvest directly from that, as long as each record has a direct link to the record page in your collection (and ideally a link to a thumbnail image). Other options are being worked on and may be possible, such as harvesting via Z39:50 or SRU. If you can export your metadata from your database into our preferred schema, then we can import it easily. How we transfer it depends on what size the files are - we're happy to receive it electronically or post if a drive/DVD is easier for you. If you can export your metadata but not into our preferred schema that's fine, we may still be able to import it if you can share your database and schema so we know what data is in each field. You will also need to consider future maintenance of your site, if anything is due to change then you will need to notify us in advance so that we can keep the links valid so users can still find your content if you redesign your site. It would also be good to update us when you add new content to your site What do I need to do if I want to share content and metadata? Get in touch with us in the first instance and let us know what content you hold, under what licence, and why you would like it to be included along with your contact details. We will then consider your content for inclusion and discuss options with you.

28 SCA Board Meeting, 31 May 2011 Future options JISC Digging into Data Challenge JISC MediaHub hosted content offered as a dataset Activity in Discovery environment potential user of the RDTF-generated open metadata m2m interface to some of the metadata in JISC MediaHub Contribution to Film & Sound Think Tank vision At June 2 nd meeting, and will keep a close eye on implementation Thanks for your attention - any questions?
