Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. King was a Baptist minister who preached civil disobedience. Civil disobedience is a peaceful refusal to obey laws. Martin Luther told his followers they should always meet hate with love. 1,2

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” -Martin Luther King Jr.

SCLC In 1957 King joined with other church leaders to found the SCLC (Southern Christian Leadership Conference). African American churches would play a prominent role in the movement for civil rights. They were places people could gather to show support for one another and hear a common message. 3,4

Sit-ins One of the NON-VIOLENT means of protest supported by Martin Luther King and the SCLC was sit-ins. Sit-ins were a form of protest in which people would sit and refuse to leave. Sit-ins were used in an attempt to desegregate lunch counters throughout the South. 5
