Asian Longhorned Beetle Invasive Species Report By Ben Swartz

Anoplophora glabripennis Phylum or Division: Arthropoda Class: Insecta Order: Coleoptera Family: Cerambycidae

Life Cycle They mate and lay eggs in the summer and fall Eggs hatch within 1-2 weeks Larvae take about 3 months to mature Mature Larvae pupate within the bark for about 18 days

Origin and Spread The species is believed to originate in China They were transported in wooden packing material used in cargo shipments They are quickly spreading in Chicago, Illinois and several locations in New England

Potential Spread The current population is somewhat under control, but the government fears spread to denser New England forests It is believed that if the beetles reach these forests or national parks, the damage will be irreparable

The Problem They primarily affect hardwood trees The beetles make small holes in trees to lay eggs The larvae feed on the tree's xylem and phloem The mature beetles then tunnel out This can caused severe damage and often death

Methods of Control Anyone who sees either the beetles or signs they have been in the area is asked to report it to proper authorities If the marks of egg-laying are found, the tree is cut down before the mature beetles can emerge People can also: -Avoid planting host trees -Be careful about moving firewood -Have trees regularly inspected
