Suicide Prevention is Everyone’s Responsibility Risk Factors Risk factors are events or conditions that could result in suicidal thoughts or actions.  History of previous suicide attempts.  Substance abuse.  History of depression or other mental illness.  Family history of suicide or violence.  A serious medical problem.  Significant loss (death of loved one, etc.).  Setbacks (academic, career, or personal).  Severe, prolonged, or perceived unmanageable stress.  A sense of powerlessness, helplessness, and/or hopelessness. How You Can Help  Talk to the person. Ask them, “ Are you think about killing yourself.” Stay calm.  Don’t leave them alone and remove any means of self harm.  Actively listen to produce relief. Take control of the situation, but don’t use force.  Don’t leave them alone, take them to the Emergency room or call 911 or call TALK. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a 24-hour, toll-free suicide prevention service available to anyone in suicidal crisis. If you need help, please dial TALK (8255). You will be routed to the closest possible crisis center in your area. With more than 130 crisis centers across the country, our mission is to provide immediate assistance to anyone seeking mental health services. If you press 1 to indicate a veteran your will be transferred to the VA suicide lifeline. Call for yourself, or someone you care about. Your call is free and confidential. Warning Signs Warning signs are actions or emotions that would cause you to believe an individual could be at risk of suicide.  Talk of suicide or killing someone else  Giving away property or disregard for what happens to one’s property  Withdrawal from friends and activities  Problems with girlfriend (boyfriend) or spouse  Acting bizarre or unusual (based on your knowledge of the person)  In trouble with the law  Experiencing financial problems or loss of job  Significant life changes
