Suicide Prevention is Everyone’s Responsibility Risk Factors Risk factors are events or conditions that could result in suicidal thoughts or actions.  History of previous suicide attempts.  Substance abuse.  History of depression or other mental illness.  Family history of suicide or violence.  A serious medical problem.  Significant loss (death of loved one, etc.).  Setbacks (academic, career, or personal).  Severe, prolonged, or perceived unmanageable stress.  A sense of powerlessness, helplessness, and/or hopelessness. How You Can Help  Talk to the person. Ask them, “ Are you think about killing yourself.” Stay calm.  Don’t leave them alone and remove any means of self harm.  Actively listen to produce relief. Take control of the situation, but don’t use force.  Don’t leave them alone, take them to the Emergency room or call 911 or call TALK. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a 24-hour, toll-free suicide prevention service available to anyone in suicidal crisis. If you need help, please dial TALK (8255). You will be routed to the closest possible crisis center in your area.
