Where is the story taking place?

Long Island, New York

What is the time period in which the Great Gatsby takes place?

1920s (Jazz Age)

What place represents the moral and social decay?

The Valley of Ashes

Where does Gatsby and Nick live?

West egg

What kind of place is East Egg?

East Egg is the place where all the mansions are and where the rich live, while West Egg is where the poor people live.

Describe Nick Carraway

The novel’s narrator, from Minnesota, educated at Yale, fought in World War I, came to New York to work in the Bond Business, usually reserves judgment, and Daisy Buchanan’s cousin.

Daisy Buchanan

Nick’s cousin who is married to Tom Buchanan and living together in West Egg. She is high class and rich, and behaves superficially to mask her pain at her husband’s constant infidelity.

Tom Buchanan

Daisy’s immensely wealthy husband, once a member of Nick’s social club at Yale. Tom is an arrogant, hypocritical bully. His social attitudes are laced with racism and sexism.

Jordan Baker

Daisy’s friend, a woman that Nick met for the first time at the dinner he was invited to by Daisy in chapter one. She is boyish, self- centered, beautiful, but also dishonest

Jay Gatsby

Gatsby is a fabulously wealthy young man living in a Gothic mansion in West Egg. He is famous for the lavish parties he throws every Saturday night but no one knows where he comes from, what he does, or how he made his fortune.

What kind of business was Nick in when he got to New York?

Bond Buisness

Where did Nick graduate from?

Yale

What does the book in the Great Gatsby, The rise of the Colored Empire, support?

Racism and white-supremacy

How many times has Nick gotten drunk in his life?

Twice

What does Tom give Myrtle as a gift?

A puppy!

“I hope she’ll be a fool—that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.” What does this quote tell us about Daisy?

This quote offers a revealing glimpse into Daisy’s character. She describes her own boredom with life and seems to imply that a girl can have more fun if she is beautiful and simplistic. Daisy is smart but while she refers to the social values of her era, she does not seem to challenge them

“When I came back from the East last autumn I felt that I wanted the world to be in uniform and at a sort of moral attention forever;” What does this tell us about the narrator?

Shows the narrator’s want of a morally-just world where there is order and restraint.

“Get some chairs, why don’t you, so somebody can sit down.” “Oh, sure,” This quote was from Myrtle speaking to her husband and his response. What does this tell us about Wilson?

We see that George Wilson is a lifeless, exhausted husband who idolizes and loves Myrtle, to even respond sincerely to rude requests.

“I have been drunk just twice in my life, and the second time was that afternoon;” This quote tells us what about the narrator?

This quote shows us how honest, tolerant, and moral the narrator is by showing us how he wouldn’t become addictive to one of the most addictive substances in the world. This also shows how bad of an influence Tom is by showing how he can influence someone who doesn’t drink alcohol, to drink.

“Making a short deft movement, Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand.” What is the context of this quote from? And what could it mean?

This quote is from Tom breaking Myrtle’s nose because she kept talking about Daisy after being told not to. This shows that Tom may still have some feelings for Daisy, feeling bad about what he is doing. It could also mean that Tom is a person who likes to feel dominant and wont tolerate any resistance.

Describe Tom Buchanans attitude toward African americans and minorities.

He feels that if they are not kept in line pretty soon the whites will be the minority - white supremacist

Describe the relationship of Tom Buchanan and his wife.

Very shallow, falling apart but neither of them wants to talk about it. She knows he is having an affair with another woman but does nothing

What is Mr. Gatsby looking at, at the end of Ch. 1?

A green light out at sea

Explain the feelings of nick during the party in New York City.

He is utterly repulsed by the behavior of Tom and his friends, but at the same time is fascinated by them.

Why did Tom Buchanan break Myrtle's nose?

She talked about his wife and repeated he name over again after he told her not to speak of her
