Presentation transcript:

MICE Tracking Detectors Malcolm Ellis NFMCC Meeting 12 th March 2006

Tracker Status KEK test beam data analysis ongoing –Light yield observed in cosmic ray test at Fermilab –Results from Osaka and Fermilab analyses of KEK test beam data –Plans Tracker construction plans –Procurement –Mechanical design –Quality Assurance Read out system –Cryogenic system –Front end electronics Software

Light Yield observed at Fermilab 2500 ppm Expectation 10.6 p.e.

Four Station Prototype New

Osaka Analysis Original stations: –Light yield ~20% less than expectations New (fourth) station: –Light yield ~40% less than original station Based on V views of stations B and D –Consistent results from FNAL analysis H. Sakamoto A. Horikoshi

Damaged Mirrors? FNAL mirror reflectivity set up: Batches of fibre tested from ALL stations –New (fourth) station AND original stations –Results ALL consistent with 80% reflectivity –No evidence for poor mirroring on new station

Damaged fibres? No evidence of dependence of light yield on position along fibre … –… but, need to sort out decoding problem –Also indicates mirror ‘OK’ –Channel-to- channel response awaits final decoding

Connectors!

Light Loss summary Light Yield ~20% lower than expected in original three stations –Possibly due to decoding problems (biasing event selection to include noise on pedestal) Fourth station shows further reduction –Between 25% and 40% of that in the original three stations depending on the analysis Connector hole misalignments –Old and new station connectors lose approximately 15% –Patch panel connectors lose an additional 20% Analysis ongoing in both groups Investigation of the hardware continuing QA technique development as part of investigation Plan to build a fifth station to test construction technique and QA procedure before construction of final trackers.

Procurement Scintillating and clear fibre ordered from Kuraray 4 Sumitomo cryocoolers ordered: –Water-cooled, indoor compressors –20m high pressure helium hoses –Delivery soon Parts for four 2-cassette VLPC cryostats ordered at FNAL

Mechanical design Preparing for D&S review in April Aiming to complete fifth station (check of final design, construction and QA techniques) by July. Full production to begin in July.

Quality Assurance Scanning stage used to position a UV LED over fibre plane. LED excites 3HF in one fibre and CCD cameras image the fibre and mirror: –Measure light output –Check for bundling or connector threading errors –Measure transmission through mirror 606+ / /-5 Spot smaller than a fibre Intense central area

Cryogenic System Reliable operation at FNAL and KEK Design updated (thermal link) –Cryostat package out for bid –Move to fabrication shortly. Demonstrated temperature stability with the cryostat tilted by 25 degrees:

Front End Electronics AFEIIt pre-production boards have arrived and are under test TripT testing is progressing –Current first pass yield is 80% –More than enough chips for D0 + MICE + spares for both experiments. Still a lot of critical work required on firmware for AFEIIt use in MICE: –Plans being developed by T. Hart (IIT) –Possible support from RAL (Engineers visiting on 20 th and 21 st March) –Test stand being setup at FNAL (IIT group) and RAL

Software Simulation studies: –Station spacing –RF Background and front end electronics effect on pattern recognition Reconstruction: –Currently in the process of a major upgrade of G4MICE –Working towards improved tracker reconstruction, PID. KEK data analysis –Being performed in G4MICE –Algorithms being developed for light loss study and QA process are being incorporated into G4MICE.
