Creating Summary Statements What is the most important information from the paragraph? Should or could you use a direct quote as part of the summary statement?

Summary Statements—Example 13 Making a crushing analogy— “[it’s like] inviting doctors convicted of malpractice to instruct our medical students”—Prose believes that students should read Angelou closely and realize that her writing is muddled and poorly crafted.

Summary Statements—Example 14 Prose summarizes the plot and characters of To Kill a Mockingbird, “mocking” the novel as a “treacly account” of racial injustice in the South during the Depression.

Summary Statements—Example 15 In discussing Mockingbird, Prose contends that readers can feel good about themselves, “never harbor[ing] the racist attitudes” in the book.
