5 Homework: Research to Have Two Sources. Bring Friday. 1.Find two credible sources. What are credible sources? 2.Synthesize research! What does synthesize mean? 3.Copy all info for a works cited (easybib.com). Record specifics (quotes), etc. Save the page as a bookmark. Or copy the hyperlink so you can get back.

6 Research Questions Biography Brainstorm Did Lee try to recreate her experience in her hometown when creating Scout and Maycomb? How did Lee’s friendship with Truman Capote influence Dill? In what ways did Lee’s father influence Atticus? Historical Brainstorm How did the Civil Rights influence the book? OR How did the book influence the Civil Rights? In what way did the depression in the south capture a successful country in the 1960s Are racist attitudes accurately captured in the book?

7 Outline Essay Step-by-Step.

8 Thesis: Create interest, provide background, orient the reader, and assert the purpose of the paper (thesis statement). Include the title of the novel and the author’s name. The title of the book should be italicized. EXAMPLE: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Background biography or sketching of the historical moment you are discussion (the depression or Civil Rights era). Your thesis statement should include 1. the novel title and author (if they have not previously been mentioned), 2. your opinion on how research of bio or historical moment sheds new light on the literary qualities/elements of the novel, and 3. how you’re going to prove your point (roadmap). THESIS STATEMENT: Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger shows the anxiety a child feels about nuclear holocaust—which audiences of the time would have also felt—because of Holden’s concern about death, constant paranoia, and anger at those in charge.

9 The Body Paragraph Support your point with examples, quotations, and details from the text. Use 3X paragraph format—exposition (topic sentence), examples, explanations It’s in your explanations that you show how the example fits with your thesis, or your overall argument.
