USCG Auxiliary Deck Plate Leadership Series 1 Auxiliary Deck Plate Leadership Series ADM Papp’s Leadership Experiences USCG Leadership Competency: Leading Others: Taking Care of People Learning Outcomes: Describe ADM Papp’s two main examples of leadership. Discuss how to apply ADM Papp’s examples to the flotilla. This is the sixth of six videos presenting ADM Papp’s view of servant leadership and how he applies the approach to his daily leadership of the Coast Guard.

Pre-video Discussion 1. Can a good leader fail? 2. Is leadership about the leader or those being led? USCG Auxiliary Deck Plate Leadership Series 2

Coast Guard's Definition of Leadership “You influencing or inspiring others to achieve a goal” USCG Auxiliary Deck Plate Leadership Series 3 Let’s watch the video !

Video Discussion 1. What was the difference between the first two commands for ADM Papp as the leader? 2. Why is change not an overnight proposition? 3. ADM Papp said he gained respect and credibility at his second command only after he did what? USCG Auxiliary Deck Plate Leadership Series 4

Lesson Summary  ADM Papp noted that he made many mistakes.  He noted that junior officers should use the chiefs for their knowledge and experience.  We have members in the Auxiliary with the same skills.  He noted the Commanding Officers that get in trouble usually are not humble and show humility but there self-service balance is usually off.  He also noted that when things go well you do not learn why; it takes a failure to force you to recognize what you did wrong and what you need to do to correct it.  After describing his first two commands he noted that leadership is not about him but about those he served.
