2 SERVANT LEADERSHIP and THE WARRIOR SPIRIT

3 Class Overview Servant Leadership defined.
The importance of Servant Leadership. Examples of servant leaders. What servant leaders are like and what they do. The Warrior Spirit defined. The benefits of the Warrior Spirit. Who are warriors?

4 Servant Leadership Is when the leader sees themself as a servant to the team. Is a mindset and a way of life rooted in selflessness. Is a devotion to duty and to the development of the potential in one’s followers.

5 Servant leaders are... Inspirational. Effective. Helpful. Successful. Selfless. Humble. Willing to work hard to better themselves for the benefit of others. NOT concerned with using leadership positions to obtain power, honor, fame, or success.

6 What servant leadership is NOT.
“I am the officer in charge, my job isn’t to go work. My job is to sit in this chair and monitor your work.” -A quote I heard spoken at a TX WG Encampment

7 “Wait…I thought I was in charge....”
A true leader can serve his/her followers without completely neglecting themselves and losing command in the process. There is a vast difference between being “servile,” and being a “servant.” Servant leaders are not forced to help those below or above them, they choose to.

8 Humility is the key. Humility will give you the ability to accomplish things for others that may seem detrimental to you. As a leader you will sometimes have to humble yourself and take a fall for the sake of your follower’s success. No barrier to successful leadership is less conquerable or more troublesome then the downfall of pride. Pride makes it impossible for the leader to put his people before himself.

9 “For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” Matthew 23:12

10 Why Servant Leadership is so important.
It creates an atmosphere of good moral character. It sets an outstanding example, creating more inspirational and successful leaders. No one wants to work for a selfish boss. If they do work for them, it is out of fear. Servant Leadership inspires your followers to want to work harder and succeed because of what you have done for them. They work hard because they want to, not because they are forced to.

11 Lt. Col Hal Moore: Servant Leadership Epitomized

12 Servant Leaders in the real world.
-Lt. Col Hal Moore: “I will be the first to step on the field, and I will be the last to step off.” -Ronald Reagan: “There is no limit to what a man can do or where he can go if he doesn’t care who gets the credit.” -George Washington: “The next time you have too much work and not enough men, the next time you are too important or too high ranking or proud to work, send for the Commander in Chief, and I will come again.” -Dr. Martin Luther King Jr: “Recognize that he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. That’s the new definition of greatness.”

13 The Warrior Spirit: A pre-requisite to Servant Leadership.
It is: A Condition of the Heart A tough mindedness and tireless motivation A strong character A willingness to make sacrifices

14 Warriors… Defend their personal honor
Hold strict values and stick to ethical codes of conduct Are motivated to complete the mission and to help their teammates, even if it doesn’t benefit themselves. Think about other people’s needs before thinking of their own. Are capable of being or becoming good servant leaders.

15 Benefits of the Warrior Spirit
It gives you the ability to instinctively put others before yourself. It creates a clear conscience, because you know you are giving your best for the team. It helps you create a good reputation. It creates a positive environment of trust and respect. The warrior spirit is contagious, so it makes both you, your peers, and your subordinates better leaders.
