MassMass Is a measure of the amount of matter. Mass is the measurement you make using a balance.
Mixtures and Pure Substances. Matter is any material that takes up space and has mass.
Properties of Matter 3.1. Quick Review  Matter is anything that: a) has mass, and b) takes up space  Mass = a measure of the amount of “stuff” (or material)
Matter. Matter Anything that has volume and takes up space Properties describe the characteristics and behavior (including changes) of matter.

BELL WORK: TUESDAY 9/21/10 On Page 18: (write Q & A) 1. What is density? 2. How does it relate to matter?

Agenda: Tuesday 9/21/10 Reminders: Late notebooks must be turned in by Tomorrow Homework due Friday 1. Bell Work (done) 2. Homework questions? 3. Lab 1. Only 1 table will be in lab at a time 2. When not in lab, you should be working on your cover page & vocab for chapter 3

BELL WORK: WEDNESDAY 9/22/10 On Page 19: (write answer in a sentence) 1. Which is more dense, a marshmallow or hot chocolate? 2. Which is more dense, water or oil?

Agenda: Wednesday 9/22/10 Reminders: Last day for late notebooks Homework due Friday 1. Bell Work (done) 2. Homework: Any questions? 3. Cornell Notes p75: Properties of Matter 4. Academic Standard: Core Standard 1

Cornell Notes p 75: Properties of Matter  What is matter?  Anything that has mass and takes up space  How can we describe matter?  Examples: Size, shape, mass, volume, density,

Cornell Notes p 75: Properties of Matter  Properties or Characteristics of Matter  Physical Can be observed or measured without changing the composition Examples: density, mass, melting point  Chemical The ability of a substance to react with other substances Examples: reaction with other chemicals, such as water

Cornell Notes p 75: Properties of Matter  How can matter change?  Physical change Changes that do not alter a substance’s composition Examples: melting, freezing, tearing  Chemical Change One or more substances changing into a new substances Examples: change in color, odor

Handout page 74  Attach and complete

BELL WORK: THURSDAY 9/23/10 On Page 19: Give 3 examples of a physical change and 3 examples of a chemical change (that was not given in yesterday’s notes)

Agenda: Thursday 9/23/10 Reminders: Homework due Tomorrow 1. Bell Work (done) 2. Homework: Any questions? 3. Cornell Notes p79: Classification of Matter 4. Academic Standard: Core Standard 1

Cornell Notes p79: Classification of Matter  Matter  Anything that has mass and volume  Substance  Matter with a constant composition  Element Made up of only one type of atom (Ex: gold)  Compound Two or more elements chemically bonded (Ex: Water)

Cornell Notes p79: Classification of Matter  Mixture  Matter with a variable composition  Physically combined/blended  Each chemical retains its own properties  Heterogeneous mixture Mixtures made up of more than one phase (ex: soup)  Homogeneous mixture (solution) Mixtures made up of only one phase (ex: metal alloys)

Cornell Notes p79: Classification of Matter  Phase - A phase is any region of a material that has its own set of properties.  Example: In a chocolate chip cookie the dough and the chips have different properties. Therefore they represent separate phases. Pure gold, which is an element, would only contain one phase. Italian dressing would clearly represent several phases, while a solution of salt water may only contain one phase.

Handout p78 “Mixtures of Matter” 1. Add the word “Compounds” & “Elements” to your choices 2. Draw a bubble for one of them, in the correct location 3. Give 5 examples for each classification group (compounds, elements, homo & hetero)

BELL WORK: FRIDAY 9/24/10 On Page 19: Give an example of each classification of matter (not given by me): Element: Compound: Heterogeneous Mixture: Homogeneous Mixture:

Agenda: Friday 9/24/10 Reminders: Homework due today 1. Bell Work (done) 2. Homework: Turn in now if you haven’t already 3. Poster Project 1. Pick your partner (you may choose to work alone) 2. Attach the instructions to page Attach the rubric to page 81
