Duties of the President n The president must report the condition of the nation to Congress. The president usually does this in the State of the Union Address in January of each year. n As chief executive, the president welcomes important officials from foreign countries. n The president is responsible for making sure that all laws are carried out.

Qualifications and Salary n To be president a person must have been born in the U.S.. n In order to be president you must be at least 35 years old and lived in the U.S. for 14 years. n The president’s salary is $ 400,000 per year with a $50,000 personal expense account. They also receive $120,000 per year for travel and entertainment. n The vice - president earns $180, 000 per year and $25,000 for expenses. n When a president retires they get their full pension, $180,000 plus Secret Service protection for life.

Term Limits n n The president is only able to serve a maximum of 8 years. (two 4 year terms) n n Franklin D. Roosevelt was the last president to serve more than two terms, he was elected to four terms. n n The 22nd amendment of the Constitution limited presidents to two elected terms.

Electing the President n The presidential election is an indirect system of electing the president into office. n Each state has as many electors as electoral votes. n The candidate with the most electoral votes wins the election. A candidate must get 271 of the 538 electoral votes in order to win the election.

Time of Election n n Congress sets a single date when voters across the nation choose the president. This date is the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November. “Super Tuesday” n n Congress also sets the date when all electors cast their votes for president and vice - president.
