IST Call 5 Preparatory Workshop on “Collaborative Working Environments” Nuria de Lama Las ideas no duran mucho. Hay que hacer algo con ellas. Santiago Ramón y Cajal

Turning Client Vision into Results 2 Objectives of the presentation Why am I here? Role of ATOS ORIGIN in ETPs What is an ETP (European Technology Platform)? –Rational and objectives of an ETP (the “WHAT”) –Steps to be taken (the “HOW”) Current situation on ETPs with synergies with “Collaborative Working Environments” –The PRESENT: eMobility, ENIAC, ARTEMIS –The FUTURE: S3, NEM Collaborative Working Environments. Is it a challenge for a potential ETP?

Turning Client Vision into Results 3 An International Player A leading IT services company providing business consulting, systems integration and managed operations that improve the effectiveness of its clients’ businesses 5th largest worldwide IT Consulting company, 1st European Annual revenues over € 5 bn 48,000 employees In 50 countries R&D mainly in Spain

Turning Client Vision into Results 4 Worldwide Presence

Turning Client Vision into Results 5 What is an ETP? When is an ETP created? –An ETP (industry-driven) is created when industry observes: (+) an industry need/challenge (-) an industry concern IP NoE IP NoE ETP FP5 FP6 FP7

Turning Client Vision into Results 6 What is an ETP? ETP is an autonomous entity, industry-led, and industry- driven. Contribution from public partners and academia are welcome ETP is made for agreeing on research agenda that will drive to business (company’s target) and EU target (growth, jobs, competitiveness) ETP is *NOT* an instrument of the European Commission Several contributors may support the existence of platforms: (EC, MS, private banks, companies) Ways of contribution by EC: –Joint undertaking (art. 171) –Assisted presence in IP, NoEs, STREPs Ways of contribution by MS: –National research programmes –Art 169 (uncertainty)

Turning Client Vision into Results 7 STEPS for an ETP 1.STAKEHOLDERS GETTING TOGETHER 1.Governance structure: roles and responsibilities 2.Identification of the core group 3.Identification of extended group of partners Industry Public Authorities (mirror groups) Research Institutes and Academia Financial community Civil society, including users 2.DEFINITION OF AN RTD AGENDA in accordance with Lisbon Agenda and providing great IMPACT. –Vision Document –SRA: Strategic Research Agenda RTD priorities Timeframes Budgets 3.RESEARCH IMPLEMENTATION –Article 171 –Joint Technology Initiative –Search for other Financial sources

Turning Client Vision into Results 8 Current situation on ETPs Hydrogen and Fuel cells European Nanoelectronics Initiative Advisory Council (ENIAC)* Nanomedicine Plants for the future Water supply and sanitation Photovoltaics Sustainable chemistry Global animal health Road Transport Research advisory council (ERTRAC) Rail Research Advisory council (ERRAC) Waterborne TP Innovative and sustainable use of forest resources (UD) Industrial safety (UD) Mobile and wireless communications (eMobility)* Innovative Medicines for Europe Embedded systems (ARTEMIS)* Advisory council for aeronautics research in Europe (ACARE) European Space technology platform (ESTP) Steel Future textiles and clothing (ETP- FTC) Manufuture- Future manufacturing technologies Construction Technology (ECTP) Advanced engineering material and technologies (EuMat) (UD) Clean Power (UD)

Turning Client Vision into Results 9 What is relevant in Collaborative Working Environments? AMI (Ambient Intelligence) ENABLERS: 1.Pervasive and Ubiquitous computing  Micro & nanoelectronics everywhere, surrounding the environment 2.Advanced Networking  Everything connected 3.Seamless and advanced intelligent interfaces Nanoelectronics (ENIAC) Nanoelectronics (ENIAC) Embedded Systems (ARTEMIS) Mobile & Wireless (eMobility) Mobile & Wireless (eMobility) Netwroked and Electronic Media Software, systems & services Other possible ETPs?

Turning Client Vision into Results 10 CWE, potential ETP? Current platforms are based on two different approaches: –(1) Technology-driven (centered on a specific technology or group of technologies without any specific application domain) –(2) Sector-based (main driver is the application domain, addressing an area of great IMPACT for Europe from a concrete point of view) Examples of both kinds: –(1) eMobility (mobile and wireless), ENIAC (nanoelectronics); ARTEMIS (embedded systems)... –(2) Global animal health, Rail research, road transport, photovoltaics, steel, future textiles, future manufacturing technologies, construction.. Collaborative working environments have not been addressed as such, but: IS THERE A REAL POTENTIAL FOR AN ETP? –In terms of technologies? –In terms of sectors?

Thank you! Nuria de Lama
