Variables and Expressions 1-1

Vocabulary Variable – a letter used to represent unspecified numbers or values. Algebraic expression – consists of one or more numbers and variables along with one or more arithmetic operations. Factors – numbers or variables being multiplied. Product – the answer to a multiplication problem.

More Vocabulary Evaluate – means to find the value or solve Power – tells how many times the base is used as a factor. 3 4 means that 3 (the base) will be multiplied four times (power). (3)(3)(3)(3)

Words That Lead to Addition Sum More than Increased Plus Altogether

Words That Lead to Subtraction Decreased Less Difference Minus How many more

Words That Lead to Multiplication Times Product Of Factor

Words That Lead to Division Quotient Half of 1/3 of Seperate

Writing an Algebraic Expression 14 more than the number n 12 less the product of 7 and a number x 12 less than the product of 7 and a number x

More Examples One fourth the size of x The product of ¾ and a to the fifth power. The sum of 11 and x to the third power.

More Examples The quotient of x and more than the product of 6 and a number. y123/english/academy123_content/wl- book-demo/ph-140s.html
