ALGEBRA - Translating MATH 7

INTRODUCTION Topics to be covered today: Algebraic Expressions Words that mean operations Translating Verbal Expressions to Written Algebraic Expressions What is next?

Algebraic Expressions An algebraic expression is a word or sentence that contains a variable, like x, b – 4, and 5n + 3. When solving real-world problems, we sometimes have to translate words or phrases into algebraic expressions.

Words that mean operations: Addition plus sum increased by more than* greater than* gain of Subtraction minus difference decreased by less than* less take away subtracted from*

Words that mean operations: Multiplication times product double (triple, etc…) by of per Division divided by quotient separate equally

Translating Verbal Expressions to Algebraic Expressions When you see “a number”, this is your variable (use the given letter, or make one up if one is not given) Ex) a number x increased by 3 translated to x + 3 A number decreased by 7 translated to p - 7

The Stars You should have noticed that more than, greater than, subtracted from and less than all have stars. The reason is because the order of how you write the expression with these operations should be reversed. Ex) 5 more than x should be written x + 5 3 less than y should be y – 3 LESS THAN SHOWS UP EVERY YEAR!

Examples the sum of a number and nine a number x increased by eleven the product of six and a number twelve decreased by a number

More Examples: Watch out for the ones with more than one operation! Ex. The sum of six and three times a number Ex. Five times a number, decreased by nine

More Examples Ex. Seven less than four times a number* Ex. Six less than half a number* Ex. Five times the sum of a number and nine

Write an Expression in Words Write your own expression for the following:

What is Next? What makes an expression an equation? Solving One-Step and Two-Step Algebra Equations with and without Integers
