Conventions Writing Traits

What are conventions?  Spelling  Ensuring all words are spelled with the proper Canadian spelling  Grammar  Use of only one tense (past vs present.. Not both!)  Ensuring that sentences flow well with the correct words  Paragraphing  Is it there? Does each paragraph discuss one main idea? Do all the paragraphs connect?!  Punctuation and capitalization  Use of periods, commas and other punctuation markings that are needed within a sentence  Making sure all proper names (names of people, places, or products) are capitalized  In short… it’s editing a piece of writing!

How do I edit my, or someone else’s, work?  Show where changes need to be made by using specific markings  Give suggestions for change  Be specific  Always remember that you are looking at someone’s work, so its important to be respectful  Never actually change the work  No work is perfect, so if you are struggling read the piece of writing aloud  A dictionary should be close by to help with spelling

Editing symbols

Continuum  Level 1  Very few words are correctly spelt  Many errors make it difficult to read the work  Every or many lines need to be edited  Level 2  Spell simple words correctly, but struggle with others  Quite a few error need to be edited to help the reader understand me  Level 3  I spell all simple words correctly, and some more difficult words are also correct  Few punctuation, grammar, and capitalization errors  Some editing needs to be done  Level 4  Many, if not all words are spelt correctly  Little to no errors within my work  This is ready to be shared with my peers!

Task  With an elbow partner work on the sheet labeled “What up?”  Use the markings we discussed to edit the work  Once complete, write a descriptive paragraph (that is 5-8 lines!!) about your favourite birthday gift  Remember to appeal to the senses  When complete have a peer edit your work
