Presentation transcript:

Ecstasy an overpowering emotion or exaltation; a state of sudden, Intense feeling.

On the brain Ecstasy directly effects the brain by stimulating three neurotransmitters, serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. Serotonin controls sleep, appetite, pain, and behavioral actions. Studies have proven that the increase of serotonin and dopamine can hinder the body from producing the natural stimulants producing the opposite effects of the drug ecstasy.

Dopamine Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that helps control the brain's reward and pleasure centers. Dopamine also helps regulate movement and emotional responses, and it enables us not only to see rewards, but to take action to move toward them. Dopamine deficiency results in Parkinson's Disease, and people with low dopamine activity may be more prone to addiction.

norepinephrine Norepinephrine is similar to adrenaline. It works by constricting the blood vessels and increasing blood pressure and blood glucose. Norepinephrine is used to treat life-threatening low blood pressure that can occur with certain medical conditions or surgical procedures. This medication is often used during CPR (cardio- pulmonary resuscitation).

How its taken Its usually taken by mouth or snorting Some like the bitter taste of the powder by capsule, and just take licks at a time

But, what is it? While the quality of ecstasy has been high over the past year, pills which contain a mix of MDMA/MDEA and other ingredients, or which are made up entirely of other substances altogether are always around

Continued ….. Pills sold as ecstasy might contain other psychoactive substances, commonly amphetamine or speed. LSD has been found in a small number of pills. 2-CB has appeared in 'ecstasy' but is more often sold under its own name. Caffeine is frequently found in fake ecstasy

A medical point of view Is being studied to treat: Post-traumatic stress disorder Anxiety Pain among terminal cancer patients In the past ecstasy has been used with marriage counseling

History “Created by a German pharmaceutical company Merck in 1912, however MDMA was not ingested by humans for about another half century. During the 1970s in the United States, pharmacologist Dr Alexander Shulgin rediscovered the MDMA compound and MDMA was promoted as a therapeutic product to give patients insight into their problems and reduce their psychological defences”

Above the law? 10 years in jail for selling or producing 50 grams or a fine of 4 million If a death is involved the sentence goes up to 20 years or 8 million Possession of 5 grams is 5-40 years

But what does it mean? Ecstasy tablets are stamped with logos for companies or commercial products as a trade mark for the producer’s personal product. Popularity gets out and its not uncommon to have someone produce a pill with the same logo with less quality

Fun facts… In the United States, more than 12 million people have taken ecstasy According to the Drug Abuse Warning Network, there was a 123% increase in the number of emergency room visits involving MDMA from 2004 to 2009 Since 1985 MDMA has been a Schedule I substance under the Controlled Substances Act. Schedule I substances, which include heroin and LSD, have a high potential for abuse and serve no legitimate medical purpose.
