Internet Vocabulary CTE Intro

URL  The “address” of a website. Entering this address in the Address Bar will take you directly to a particular website.  Ex:  Warning: Do NOT type in an address if you aren’t sure it exists. You might see something you didn’t intend.

WWW  World Wide Web – not all websites are on the World Wide Web, but most will require it in order to get in. Most websites begin with:

Browser  A program that allows you to interact with internet.  This is what you click on to get to the internet. There are several popular browsers: Explorer Netscape Firefox Google Chrome Safari

Search Engine  Powerful servers that keep an index of information on the Internet. Google Yahoo Ask.com  Remember—search engines don’t “think.” They search by KEYWORD.

Network  A number of computers connected together to share information and hardware. A Local Area Network (LAN) is small, perhaps a few computers sharing a printer. A Wide Area Network (WAN) is large, with many computers linked between towns or countries. The Internet is a network of networks that circles the globe.

Server  A computer that delivers information and software to other computers linked by a network All websites must be uploaded to a server in order to be seen by the public on the website.

HTML Code  A code language used to create websites on the internet.  Websites look very different when you see only the code. Every command has a code, such as: Mrs. Rees is Awesome! The <> is code, and will not actually show up when the page is loaded onto the internet. This is the code for bolding text.

Searching the Internet  You will now learn to: Find good information on the internet Search for images Save images to your computer
