4 WHAT IS THE INTERNET? The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to link several billion devices worldwide.

5 INTERNET BROWSERS A software application that is primarily used to access information from the World Wide Web. Major web browser applications include:  Firefox  Internet Explorer (IE)  Google Chrome  Safari (Apple Computers)

7 UNIFORM RESOURCE LOCATOR (URL) URL is an acronym for Uniform Resource Locator and is a reference (an address) to a resource on the Internet. Example:  Http://www.example.com

8 INTERNET BROWSER & URL PRACTICE Open Internet Explorer (IE) Go to the URL box at the top of the screen. Type: www.alabasterschools.org for the URLwww.alabasterschools.org Hit the “Enter” key. You should see this page. Exit once you have completed this.

9 ZOOMING YOUR SCREEN Sometimes the text or images on your screen are too small. You can adjust how far you “zoom in” on your screen. There are two main ways to do this:  By using your keyboard  By using your mouse

10 ZOOMING YOUR SCREEN Zooming using the keyboard: Press the CTRL key on your keyboard. While holding down the CTRL key, press the “+” key to zoom in and the “-” key to zoom out. You may also zoom in or out by clicking your mouse if there is a slider or zoom tool in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen (this is not always there).

11 PRACTICE ZOOMING Open Internet Explorer (IE) on your computer. Enter the following website address (URL):  www.alabasterschools.org www.alabasterschools.org  ***Note: Schools is PLURAL

12 PRACTICE ZOOMING You should see this webpage:

13 PRACTICE ZOOMING Now hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard, then tap the “+” key once, then twice, etc. It should zoom “in” on your screen. vs.

14 PRACTICE ZOOMING Now practice the same thing, but with the minus key.

15 TEACHER BLOGS Go to tms.alabasterschools.org Click on “faculty and staff” on the left-hand side. Go look at your teachers’ blogs for a few minutes.
