ENERGY BALANCE AND ADULT FOOD CHOICES: CREATING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

WHAT IS ENERGY BALANCE? Calories taken in are equal to calories expended.

ENERGY BALANCE Eating more or less calories than you need causes you to be out of energy balance. You do not need to exactly balance calories taken in with calories used every day to maintain healthy weight. It is the balance over time that counts.

WHAT DETERMINES HOW MANY CALORIES WE NEED? total calorie needs are estimated by adding physical activity expenditure to resting metabolic rate. Resting metabolic rate (RMR): The number of calories needed for metabolism (basic body functions) when you are awake and relaxed Physical activity is the one factor you can change to influence total calories burned.

HOW CAN WE DETERMINE HOW MANY CALORIES WE NEED? Math!! Indirect Calorimetry DEXA Scans Bioelectrical Impedence “Bod Pod”

FACTORS INFLUENCING ADULT FOOD CHOICES When we eat, we are influenced by more extraneous factors than we realize Media Cultural Social
