The Mentor’s Role Ian McGrath Skills required to be a Mentor. Mentoring New Referees (Use of Tick box Form) Mentoring Referees who are having a difficult time. Mentoring Referees who are applying for promotion.

The Mentor’s Role A Friend to the Referee. Support in the early stages of the new Referees career. Informal relationship. No Paperwork. Oral & Listening Communication Skills. Coaching Skills – Encouragement. Counseling Skills – Tact. Current knowledge of the Laws of the Game. Feedback Skills.

Mentor Summary Advice Form Complete the tick box form and summary after the game. Use to track trainees / referee’s progress. Ensures the Mentor Coordinator has a record of your attendance at the game, to ensure you get paid for your services by the KCFA. (£10.00 per match). Useful info to share if more than one mentor is involved in coaching the same referee. Same process for trainee, promotion candidate or referee who needs addition help.

Mentor Coordinator Role Geoff Stanborough Contact the new referees by attending the referees course within the first two sessions. Collect the referee’s details, checking their suitability to referee leagues by confirming age and their availability to referee. Compile a directory of mentors to ensure you have enough suitably trained people to cover the needs of the trainees and the course. Track their availability to cover all the games that required to be covered. Personal Contact with Leagues, to ensure suitable games are available in advance for all new referees.

Mentor Coordinator Role (Continued) Match Mentee to Mentor Resource wherever possible, spread games over a 4/5 week period to match Mentor resource if needed. Collect Feedback from the Mentors, ensure tick box forms are returned for training purposes Keep a record of all games mentored. Collate all information above to ensure Payment sheets for the mentors can be forward to the County Mentor coordinator in May and December each year.

Best Practice for Mentoring New Referees Geoff Stanborough Procedures prior to the Match Half Time After the Match Mentor Forms Requirements of Registered Mentors

Prior to the Match (2 days before) As the Mentor -Are you aware? Make Telephone Contact with Mentor and New Referee, or with acknowledgement. Ensure Telephone Numbers are exchanged for pre-match and match day communications. Confirm Venue & KO Time. Youth Football - Confirm the duration of Game Is it 30, 35, 40.or 45 minutes each half? League or Cup Match – Hence may Extra Time be required? Substitutions–Normal or Roll on/Roll off.

Prior to the Match (Matchday) Mentor to be at Match min 30minutes before KO. Suggest Joint Pitch Inspection. Suggest Mentor to be present for Referees Instructions to Club Linesman. If there is a need Mentor to introduce himself to both Managers.

At Half Time Give positive encouragement & support on how he has managed the 1 st Half. Ensure he gets some relaxation, a Drink. Advise him on ONE main development area to work on or address any Major problems. Things to be Aware of in the 2 nd Half. Offer more Praise and Enjoyment prior to start of 2 nd half.

After the Match Congratulate new referee on how he refereed the match. Advise him on what he did well Offer advise on an improvement point. Ensure and offer assistance over any misconduct. Ensure he receives his Match expenses.

Mentor Forms As Mentor follow the Mentoring Check list form. Mentor Form (Tick Box Form ) which is sent to Mentor Coordinator within 48hours. ( Ensure you Complete the Summary section) Advise the referee to update the FA 6 match game form which now will include the 3 Mentored games.

Requirements of a Registered Mentor with the KCFA All Mentors must be Registered with the KCFA before they carry out Mentoring duties. In addition only Registered Mentors will receive Mentor expenses. All Mentors Must be in possession of a Mentor FA handbook All Mentors Need to hold CRB and Safeguarding Children Certificates.
