Objectives To support the 10 national libraries from the NMS, partners in the project, in becoming full members of The European Library Ensure better access by researchers across Europe to essential European information resources. To identify major problems in the research and development activities of the national libraries of Europe and to formulate recommendations how to improve the situation. To raise awareness in NMS of opportunities for participation in EU projects, within the Cultural Heritage and Learning sectors of the IST Programme
The European Library A web service or a portal which offers access to the combined resources – both digital and non-digital – of the national libraries of Europe. It enables free searching and delivers digital objects – some free and some priced. Created in the framework of the TEL project (2001–2004) with a support from the European Commission and opened to the public in March Currently includes searchable collections from 15 European national libraries and links to the collections of 30 other libraries.
TEL-ME-MOR and The European Library Analysis of requirements of the 10 national libraries from the New Member States and implementation plans for integrating their collections to The European Library. Research and support for the national libraries from the New Member States to implement metada, data transfer and unicode standards for their on-line databases. Slovenia joined the service already in 2004; Estonia and Latvia became members on 1 January 2006 Other 7 national libraries to join by the end of 2006.
Analysis of research and development A study conducted among the 10 national libraries of the New Member States to cover various topics: digitisation, analogue and digital preservation, research activities, library systems and portals, etc. Main problems, gaps, advantages and disadvantages in the national libraries identified and validated. A report compiled and published by the National Library of the Czech republic in June A report covering more countries was published in June Expansion of the study to all 45 national libraries of Europe in the future.
Awareness raising and dissemination TEL-ME-MOR central web site in English and a network of web sites in 10 languages of the New Member States; Dissemination on FP6 IST Calls 4, 5, 6 and their results; Dissemination on eContentplus Calls 1, 2 and their results; Dissemination on digital library initiatives in Europe and worldwide, especially on the: i2010: Digital Libraries strategy issued by the European Commission in September 2005; Digital Libraries Initiative announced by the Commission in March 2006; Presentations and poster sessions at international conferences; 3 regional expert workshops in spring 2006: Warsaw, Budapest and Ljubljana –
