Friday, September 4, 2015 STUDENTS PREPARE TO TAKE NOTES. Read the poem, “There Will Come Soft Rains.” Annotate the poem in the right margin as you read. Write a question that you have about the poem below the poem. “There Will Come Soft Rains”

What is the rhyme scheme of this poem? What examples of figurative language are in the poem? personification simile Use the right margin.

 Students are introduced to the short story, “There Will Come Soft Rains” through explication of the poem by the same name, learning vocabulary, review of tone, setting, and author prior to reading the short story.

What animals are described on the walls of the nursery? How are these animals created? What adjectives are most evocative in the description of these animals? What pages and paragraphs contain this information?

What other tasks does the house perform? What feeling do we get from these tasks being performed? What feeling is created as the house reads the poem? What page and paragraph contains this information?

What time does the house begin to die? What event begins the death of the house? What doe the house try to do? What feeling do we have during this part of the story?

HOMEWORK: - Review vocabulary for quiz next class. - Review your notes from the story in addition to any online resources that help you better understand the story. - Begin thinking about what might happen in a Utopian short story set in the future Los Angeles.

 Students read pages  Students take notes of observations and questions.  Students find five significant quotations and respond to them in double entry journal format.

 DAILY WARM-UP Tuesday, September 16, 2014  Review your notes and the book for a quiz on the short story, “There Will Come Soft Rains.” (Five minutes)  Take the quiz.  Correct the quiz.

 Review of tone and theme.  Authors establish tone through details and word choice.  The tone at different points in the story helps the reader to identify the theme.
