WHAT IS A GLOBAL CITIZEN?

A Global citizen is someone who makes a real contribution to creating a better World

You have a unique opportunity as Year 7 students Each one of you has been given a passport which is being held by your form tutor You have a mission during the rest of this year, and for the next four years. You will record your journey through this school as you learn to become a “Global Citizen”.

Did you realise that as a global citizen, you are at the centre of everything that happens? You are part of a family. You are at Selly Park Technology College with fellow students and friends. As a student at Selly Park School you are part of the Birmingham schools network. Birmingham is part of the West Midlands. The West Midlands is a county in the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom is part of the wider community called Europe. Europe is just one of the continents within the World. Being at the heart of something means that you can make a difference. Extending your knowledge as a global citizen is the first step to creating a better World.

What happens Form tutors keep your passports in form rooms You will need to ask them for access each time you want to record an event Stamps Checking Year Global citizenship noticeboard They will be a keepsake given to you at the end of year 11 to remind you of your journey to becoming a Global Citizen.

I participated in a pen pal exchange of letters with a student at a school in South Africa. I can compare the differences in our lifestyles and culture. We exchange pictures and cards to help each other gain an insight into life outside of our community. I research my local community in Birmingham so that I can keep my pen pal fully informed of up to date events. Letters are shared with classmates so that local knowledge and information on Birmingham is shared with our partner schools in Russia, Europe, South Africa and the Middle East and vice versa.

I have been a member of school parliament this term. I communicate the ideas of school parliament to my form at KNGS and this year we have… MY FORM DID AN ASSEMBLY TO THE WHOLE OF YEAR 7. OUR ASSEMBLY WAS ALL ABOUT RECYCLING AND THE DIFFERENCE IT MAKES TO THE WORLD WE LIVE IN. WE LOOKED AT …… MY YEAR GROUP VISITED THE GERMAN MARKET IN BIRMINGHAM. WE SAW MANY TRADITIONAL ARTEFACTS FROM GERMANY, MET GERMAN STALL HOLDERS AND SAMPLED GERMAN FOOD I HAVE APPLIED FOR A CHINESE PEN PAL. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LIVING IN CHINA IS REALLY LIKE….…. We visited a mosque in Birmingham and China town we learned that…….. I INVESTIGATED CLIMATE CHANGE DURING MY GEOGRAPHY LESSON, I CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE BY….. I shopped for my family and looked for fair trade products. I found... I joined in a language interchange workshop run by the International Society it helped me to understand the diversity and ……. I can act upon social injustices, bullying is something that we can change, we are able to… We used our maths skills in calculating how much money we raised to provide South Africa with... We have listened to African Music and compared it to…

Enjoy completing your journey. If you have any questions on passports, please ask your form tutor or Mr Mobey.
