compulsory service in the military during peacetime Conscription Yes, it is compulsory to all Singaporean and second generation permanent residents, who are males with 18 years of age.

1. Singapore Armed Forces(SAF) According to the Enlistment Act, conscription is mandatory for all "persons subject to [the] act", defined as those who are not less than 16 years and 6 months of age and not more than 40 years of age, with some exemptions and with no specific bias to gender (not limited to males). In practice however, it is only compulsory for all fit and able-bodied Singaporean men who have reached 18 years of age, and are not deferred for certain reasons, to be conscripted in military service, or Full-time National Service (NSF).

2. Singapore Police Force(SPF) Singaporean males may also be posted to SPF to serve their National Service. Hence, these people will also undergo physical and mental training. However, the only difference is the operations conducted and the uniforms thy wear. Being in the SPF, these recruits will be taught various techniques and styles in handling various criminal issues and ensure that the SPF continues to maintain its positive public image.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force is the main agency in charge of the provision of emergency services in Singapore during peacetime and emergency. A uniformed organisation under the purview of the Ministry of Home affairs, the main role of SCDF is to provide fire fighting rescue and emergency ambulance services; mitigating hazardous materials incidents, as well as formulate, implement and enforce regulations on fire safety and civil defence shelter matters

Those who are liable to serve national service, but refuse, are charged under the Enlistment Act. If convicted, they face three years' imprisonment and a fine of S$10,000

I personally felt that national service is essential for the progress and development especially for countries with a small population. This is because, only with a strong army defending the country, other countries will never have the thought of attacking the country whom has a small population, but a strong defense. Hence, it is vital. With a strong defense force, more businessman and foreign investors will tend to find the country being safe, thus setting up factories and shops in the country. Hence, there will be more job opportunities and more people will be employed. To add on, majority of the people in that country will have a stable job and they will definitely be financially stable. An example will be Singapore, which is a small country with a fantastic defense force. Singapore has progressed tremendously in various aspects. However, the main reason why the country can sustain till today, is the fact that the government has made it compulsory for all healthy males to serve NS for 2 years. Therefore, despite being a small country, the country security and defense still remains strong and steady. In addition, NS also enables the males to be trained physically and mentally. Hence, after the 2 years, males would tend to be disciplined and more mature. In conclusion, I believe that NS is beneficial to both the country and an individual as well. Therefore, I strongly agree with the government that NS is necessary for males.
