United Kingdom – Part 2 Lesson 1 2 Samuel 13:1 – 14:24

Review What was the sin (that we just studied in II Samuel 12) that set up a number the events we will be studying this quarter? How did David react when he was approached by Nathan? Did God forgive David? Were the consequences removed with the forgiveness?

Consequences 2 Sa 12:11 Thus says the Lord, ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you from your own household; I will even take your wives before your eyes and give them to your companion, and he will lie with your wives in broad daylight. 12 Indeed you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and under the sun.’” 14 However, because by this deed you have given occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also that is born to you shall surely die.” Sword Will Never Depart from Your House Evil Raised Up from Your Own Family Wives will be Taken By a Close Companion The Child Born to Bathsheba will Die

Amnon’s Sin Amnon – oldest son of David by Ahinoam Absalom – third son of David by Maacah Tamar – daughter of David by Maacah Jonadab – 1 st cousin of all (son of David’s brother Shimeah) II Samuel 13 -  Amnon was so frustrated he made himself ill.  Jonadab offered advice to his friend Amnon  Amnon followed this advice

Amnon’s Sin II Samuel 13:14-15 Amnon would not listen to the plea of Tamar and he violated her Then he “hated her with a very great hatred” and sends her away What should the consequences be for this? Deuteronomy 22:25-29

Absalom’s Plot Two years go by Sheepshearing was occurring in Baal-hazor Invite all of the King’s sons to the feast Strike vengeance on Amnon Then he would flee to Geshur

Baal-Hazor Tekoa

Joab’s Influence II Samuel 14:1-20 Joab brings in a wise woman from Tekoa Has her tell a story to King David Two sons who struggled and one struck the other and killed him The whole family wants to kill my son but it would “extinguish my coal which is left” David is willing to protect her son II Samuel 14: The woman then speaks to David about his own son

Absalom Returns Joab is allowed to retrieve Absalom from Geshur (v 21) David does not face the situation and does not want Absalom to see his face II Samuel 14:28 - Now Absalom lived two full years in Jerusalem, and did not see the king’s face. Tamar incident 3 Years2 Years Absalom’s Revenge Absalom Returns David sees Absalom

Lessons Life after sin. Even when your sin is forgiven. Consequences still exist! Does sin really make you happy? Should our own previous sin change the way we deal with sin in others? Difference in David’s reaction when confronted with his sin vs. David’s reaction to Amnon’s sin What can we learn about the advice of our friends? Should it align with God’s desires or our own?
