TUC Education Introduction to the different categories of Continuing Safety Rep Development (CSRD)

The TUC recommends 3 categories: Maintaining core skills, knowledge & experience Developing skills, knowledge & experience Developing transferable skills, knowledge & experience

Activities qualifying as CSRD All the different activities that qualify as CSRD cannot be listed, because development will vary according to each safety representative’s needs. But the following slides give some examples.

Example - MAINTAINING core skills, knowledge & experience Carrying out key functions of a safety rep such as inspecting, consulting members, investigating injuries etc. Participating in TUC/union/other health and safety courses, conferences etc. Practising key skills such as report writing, interviewing etc.

Example - DEVELOPING core skills, knowledge & experience Developing key functions of a safety rep. such as, specialist inspections, contributing to h&s induction of new members etc. Participating in TUC/union/other health and safety courses, conferences to update knowledge & skills. Developing skills such as, using powerpoint to explain new standards to members, body mapping etc.

Example – TRANSFERABLE skills Recognise wide range of skills that a safety rep possesses in their own job; as a safety rep; and beyond. For example: Giving presentations using ICT Training others Fire warden Supervisory skills Making proposals

Overlap between categories… It is important to recognise that different activities by safety representatives can: contribute to one or more of the three categories of CSRD develop one or more of skills, knowledge and experience
