Democracy  Government in which citizens exercise supreme power, acting either directly or through elected officials  Examples: United States, Sweden

Monarchy  Government in which a single ruler exercises supreme power based on heredity or divine right.  Examples: Monaco, Qatar,  Most Monarchy’s today are Constitutional Monarchies…they share power with an elected body

Dictatorship  a government in which a single person or group exercises supreme power by controlling the military and police  Example: Iraq under Saddam Hussein

Republic  A nation in which supreme power rests with the citizens and is exercised by their elected representatives  Examples: United Kingdom, India

Communism  Government in which a single political party controls both the government and economy; theories by Karl Marx to create classless society  Examples: Cuba, China

Theocracy  A government headed by religious leaders; country ruled through religious law  Examples: Vatican, Iran
