Peopling our Earth

Human Societies ► Hunter Gatherers ► Agricultural ► Industrial ► Post Industrial

Hunter Gatherers ► Gather Natural food ► Hunt ► Nomadic ► Small families ► Slow growth of population ► Around until about 10,000 years before present!

Agricultural Societies ► Beginning about 10,000 years ago! – Iran, Southeast Asia, and Africa ► Crops are grown ► People have specialized roles ► Villages and cities are formed ► Corn and Potatoes important crops that allowed population to grow exponentially!

Agricultural Societies beginnings…

Industrial Societies ► Production of food and other products done by machines! -- ► Large amount of energy and resources are required!!! ► 1700s – Industrial Revolution ► Advances in Science, Agriculture and Medicine – Leads to people living longer! ► MDCs – Australia, Germany, US, others! ► Industrial Inventions Industrial Inventions Industrial Inventions

Current World Population ► What did the text say??? What did the text say??? What did the text say??? ► How many more people can we fit on this planet? ► How many humans can Earth support without damaging ecosystems?

Where is the population growing the fastest? ► MDCs – population is stabilizing ► LDCs – less predictable with many populations booming! ► Birth rate vs. Death rate

Population Pyramids/Demography ► Fast growing ► Slow Growth ► Zero Growth

Fast Growing Most people are under 30 and have yet to reproduce! This will cause the population to grow fast when they do reproduce!!!

Slow Growth

Zero Growth

What has caused a decrease in growth in the past? ► Disease – Plague 1350 ► War ► Education – Women in France 1800s ► Family Planning

Population Policy? ► Sterilization – India ► One child policy – China ► Others – contraception, forced abortions, killing of daughters

Ecological Issues with a growing population ► Falling water tables ► Deforestation leading to soil erosion and habitat destruction ► Energy/resource depletion ► Others??

What should be done? ► The earth can only hold a finite number of people – How can we sustain life of people on our planet?
