2. How has the size of the human population changed over time?
The size of the human population has increased over time.
Initially it increased very slowly due scarce food, incurable disease, high death rates, etc
About 500 years ago, agriculture and the industrial revolution made life easier and safer and the population has grown exponentially
This rate of growth can not continue indefinitely
Be sure to look at Fig 5-10 on p.129

3. Why do population growth rates differ in countries throughout the world?
Birthrates, death rates, and the age structure of a population help predict why some countries have high growth rates while other countries grow more slowly.
The characteristics of populations and the social and economic factors that affect them, explain why some countries have exponential growth rates and other countries grow slowly or not at all.
Over the past century growth rates in the United States, Japan, and most of Europe has slowed dramatically due to modernization. That is they have reached their demographic transition.
Demographic transition begins with high birth and death rates, then death rate slows while birth rate continues to be high, and finally both birth and death rates slow
In about 10 countries, the growth rate continues to be exponential (India and China are in the lead)
