Activity 76 People, Birds, and Bats Challenge: What kinds of evidence can you use to classify vertebrates?

Getting Started… How many types(classes) of vertebrates are there? After you discuss, look on page #30-31

5 Main Classes of Vertebrates

Warm Blooded VS Cold Blooded: Warm Can regulate their body temperature to a fairly constant temperature by generating heat within their bodies. Does not mean they are literally always warm Cold Body temperature is dependent on out side temperature Does not mean they are literally cold all of the time

Procedure: Read the procedure on page 24. Use the data table provided to try and classify each of the organisms given When you are finished, work with your group answering Analysis Questions #1 and 2.

Analysis Question 1 (p. E-24) ClassMost important Characteristic: Amphibian Birds Bony Fish Mammal Reptile

Analysis #2 Some vertebrates appear to fit into two or more different classes because not every species in a class has every common characteristic of that class. Example: Whales and dolphins do not have visible hair, yet hair is considered one of the traits that distinguishes mammals from the other classes.
