1 Activity 76 People, Birds, and Bats
Challenge: What kinds of evidence can you use to classify vertebrates?

2 How many types(classes) of vertebrates are there?
Getting Started… How many types(classes) of vertebrates are there? After you discuss, look on page #30-31

3 5 Main Classes of Vertebrates

4 Warm Blooded VS Cold Blooded:
Can regulate their body temperature to a fairly constant temperature by generating heat within their bodies. Does not mean they are literally always warm Body temperature is dependent on out side temperature Does not mean they are literally cold all of the time

5 Read the procedure on page 24.
Use the data table provided to try and classify each of the organisms given When you are finished, work with your group answering Analysis Questions #1 and 2.

6 LETTER CHARACTERISTICS CLASS (confused with) NAME
Stirbridge Kalmus Murray Jones Fur Bill like a duck Lays eggs Milk from mother Mammal Bird Bird/ Fish/Reptile/Amphib Tim Thomaso Phil Thelma Ruby Ritter

7 LETTER CHARACTERISTICS CLASS (confused with) NAME Stirbridge Bone on back, dry, sunning, lungs Reptile (Amphibian) gecko Kalmus Hair, sharp beak Bird (Mammal) Kiwi Murray Jones Fur, bill, lays eggs, feeds young with milk Mammal (Bird) Platypus Tim Scales, hairy, warm blooded, (Reptile) Armadillo Thomaso Babies from stomach, fins, gills Fish Seahorse Phil No fins, breathes air, smooth skin (fish) Sea Snake Thelma Fly, wings, hair, Milk from mom Bat Ruby Riter scales, ok on land, fins Lungs/ gills Mudskipper

8 Analysis Question 1 (p. E-24)
Class Most important Characteristic: Amphibian Birds Bony Fish Mammal Reptile

9 Analysis #2 Some vertebrates appear to fit into two or more different classes because not every species in a class has every common characteristic of that class. Example: Whales and dolphins do not have visible hair, yet hair is considered one of the traits that distinguishes mammals from the other classes.
