Introduction No teachers? Learning occur? Order? Teachers/Managers –Planning –Organizing –Staffing –Implementing –Controlling

Teachers = Managers Bad teachers, what traits did they have? Managers need to treat their employees well too

MANAGEMENT What must managers do to accomplish the goals of an organization?

Collins Type 1ish writing Partner up, answer following questions: 1.What does the word manager mean to you? Make a list of five words that come to mind when you hear the word manager. 2.What does it take to be a great manager? 3.What skills and attributes do each of you possess that would make you a great manager?

Who is a manager? Managers have many different roles to play to make sure the business is operating smoothly. Management The process of accomplishing the goals of an organization through the effective use of people and other resources.

What do managers do? Planning Organizing Staffing Implementing Controlling

What do managers do? Planning- analyzing information, setting goals, and making decisions about what needs to be done Organizing- identifying and arranging the work and resources needed to achieve the goals that have been set

What do managers do? Staffing- all of the activities involved in obtaining, preparing, and compensating the employees Implementing- effort to direct and lead people to accomplish the planned work Controlling- to what extent the business is accomplishing the goals it set out to reach in the planning stage

Management Levels Top Management Mid-Management Supervisors

Levels of Management Top Management –Highest level Mid-Management –Responsible for meeting the goals that senior management sets Supervisory Management –Lowest level of management

Central York Chain of Command – what is it? Who fits where when using CYSD as an example?

Top Management Executives are responsible for the direction and success of business CEO – Chief Executive Officer COO – Chief Operating Officer Spend most of their time on planning and control activities The Office

Mid-Management Mid-managers are responsible for specific parts of a company’s operations. Marketing manager, customer service manager, operations manager, HR manager Time is devoted to organizing, staffing and implementing. The Office

Supervisory Management Supervisors make sure the day-to-day operations of the business run smoothly. Forepersons, crew leaders, and store managers are examples Spend most of their time implementing the plans of executives and mid-mangers The Office

Management by Others Employees that are not managers often do work that seems to be management level. Could take part in hiring and training new employees Some are asked to be leaders of work groups

Management Marshmallow Challenge! Form into your groups Decide who will be: –The CEO (top management) –Operations Manager (mid-management) –Supervisor –Regular Employee(s)

Discussion Think of a coach, teacher, or other leader with whom you particularly liked to work with. Identify the approach the person used in working with people. Describe why that approach seemed to be effective.

Management Styles Managing a group of people is not an easy job! Managers approach directing people in different ways based on their management style. Management style The way a manager treats and involves employees.

Tactical vs Strategic Management Sometimes a manager must choose which style depending on the task at hand Sometimes a manager must choose which style depending on his/her employees

Management Styles Often happens when the manager has newer employees or ones that aren’t the best employees etc. Tactical Management A style in which the manager is more directive and controlling.

Management Styles Managers trust employees to work without direct supervision and will seek their advice on important decisions. Strategic Management A style in which managers are less directive and involve employees in decision making.

Advertisements for Managers! Create a wanted ad for each of the three levels of management we discussed Use program of your choice to create 1 page/slide and put all three ads on one screen, as if in a newspaper The ad should include a made up job opening which lists the type of work this manager would be required to do and the characteristics needed for this type of career, don’t forget hourly wage/salary! Be sure to make it look like an ad you would see in the newspaper, with box around it etc. Make sure it is 1 page/1 slide. Save it to your Drive folder for this class in a format I can view on a PC Example

You're the boss in a predominantly male environment. The presence of a new female employee stirs up conflict because your company has not had a chance to conduct sensitivity training. Some of your male employees make inappropriate remarks to your new employee. She complains to you; in response, you sanction those responsible for the conduct. You also wonder if it would be wise to move your new female employee to another position where she would be less likely to draw attention
