TECHNOLOGY-ENABLED BUSINESS SOLUTIONS FOR 21ST CENTURY GOVERNMENT FIRST THOUGHT: CONNECTIVITY – AVAILABILITY

TECHNOLOGY-ENABLED BUSINESS SOLUTIONS FOR 21ST CENTURY GOVERNMENT KENTUCKY DEMOGRAPHICS Population 4,273,951 Total area 40,411 square miles Households 1,686,618 2,250,000 Live on 12.5% of our land (50% of our population is in the Golden Triangle)

TECHNOLOGY-ENABLED BUSINESS SOLUTIONS FOR 21ST CENTURY GOVERNMENT AVAILABILITY 91.5% OR 3,890,0000 Kentucky Citizens have access to broadband - (Kentucky Ranks 40 th in availability) 8.5% do not have access to broadband ~400,000 people – this doesn’t mean they don’t access broadband, it just means they don’t have access at their home. Many drive to public wi-fi spots.

TECHNOLOGY-ENABLED BUSINESS SOLUTIONS FOR 21ST CENTURY GOVERNMENT IT IS MORE ABOUT: UTILIZATION or USE

TECHNOLOGY-ENABLED BUSINESS SOLUTIONS FOR 21ST CENTURY GOVERNMENT National Statistics: Internet Use by State – Rankings Top 5 1.) UTAH – 80% 2.) New Hampshire – 78% 3.) Washington – 77% 4.) Massachusetts – 76% 5.) Connecticut – 75% 47.) Kentucky – 58%

TECHNOLOGY-ENABLED BUSINESS SOLUTIONS FOR 21ST CENTURY GOVERNMENT UTILIZATION -1.4 Million HAVE ACCESS to broadband but DON’T use it. Reasons: 1.) Its TOO EXPENSIVE 2.)They DON’T see a value in broadband -We may be able to help with expense, but we know we have a responsibility to educate those that DON’T see the need for broadband.

TECHNOLOGY-ENABLED BUSINESS SOLUTIONS FOR 21ST CENTURY GOVERNMENT - We are working to empower and educate the Commonwealth about Broadband and its potential to improve the lives of all citizens. - Universal Access has meant that all citizens have the opportunity to have electric service, telephone service – and now, should mean broadband service. -Broadband needs to be viewed as a critical, necessary resource for ALL Americans. -So that ALL Commonwealth citizens can have a better quality of life – broadband can improve the way we live, work, learn, govern and compete. - With this Goal the Federal Government has made funding available to the States. -We are using these funds to better understand how broadband services are used in the Commonwealth today.

TECHNOLOGY-ENABLED BUSINESS SOLUTIONS FOR 21ST CENTURY GOVERNMENT - What are the needs of your constituents? How are they using broadband today? How might they reap the benefits tomorrow? - The Goals of our Office: - To Increase the use of broadband across the Commonwealth. -To Increase the awareness among our citizens of the benefits of using broadband, and: - Improving the quantity and quality of information and content that is available to broadband users in the Commonwealth.

TECHNOLOGY-ENABLED BUSINESS SOLUTIONS FOR 21ST CENTURY GOVERNMENT Our future, in every walk of life, will depend on this new infrastructure. Whether available down the hall or down the street, we must all, sooner or later, embrace it, just as we have electricity, rail lines, and our roads. Those who embrace it faster have an advantage, Personally, and economically. -A student can attend a college without stepping foot onto campus - Entrepreneurs can operate a small business from their home - Any Doctor, anywhere, could help a patient no matter their location -A newly diagnosed individual could research options for treatment - Technical Professionals can live in Kentucky and work ANYWHERE - Broadband IS the Highway to more opportunities

TECHNOLOGY-ENABLED BUSINESS SOLUTIONS FOR 21ST CENTURY GOVERNMENT WITH YOUR HELP, beginning today, we want to: -Take a closer local look at the regions of Kentucky. -Determine the areas where we should focus our attention. -Figure out how to best address the need to make broadband services more available to Kentucky citizens. -Help people learn about, and realize the benefits of broadband.
