INTRODUCTION SMS was created during the late 1980s to work with a digital technology called GSM. The Norwegian engineers who invented it wanted a very simple messaging system that worked when users mobile phones were turned off or out of signal range. Definition & Overview SMS stands for short message service. It is a globally accepted wireless service that enables the transmission of alphanumeric messages between mobile subscribers and external systems such as electronic mail, voic systems etc. The "short" part refers to the maximum size of the text messages: 160 characters (letters, numbers or symbols in the Latin alphabet). HLR It is a database used for permanent storage & management service profiles upon requirement by SMSC the HLR provides the routing information for the indicated subscriber. MSC The MSC will deliver the short message to the specific mobile subscriber through the proper base station. It performs switghing functions. AIR INTERFACE The air interface is defined in each one of the different wireless technologies (GSM, TDMA, and CDMA). These standards specify how the voice or data signals are transferred from the MSC to the handset and back as well as the utilization of transmission frequencies, considering the available bandwidth and the system’s capacity constraints.
