FAMOUS EXPLORERS

Ferdinand Magellan Named the Pacific Ocean Explored from 1519-1522 His goal was to find the Spice Islands and bring the spice back to Spain. Discovered the Phillipines Lost his life in a war between two local chiefs Had proof that the world was round

Amelia Earhart George Putnam convinced her to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. First woman to fly a plane She studied to be a nurse. Lived from 1897-1937 Her life goal was to fly solo around the whole world.

Captain James Cook Set out from England to see how far the sun was from Venus Sailed on a ship named Tahiti He stumbled upon Hawaii thinking they were the Sandwich Islands Killed by a Hawaiian mob. Found a secret passage from North America to Asia.

Leif Erikson Born in Iceland. He was a Viking. He and his family were kicked out of Iceland. Wanted to sail West to see if there was new land. His family discovered Greenland. Clothing made of animal skin Found four lands: Holland, Vinland, the others did not have names Leif Erikson

Lewis & Clark Explored North America and went through Kansas. Thomas Jefferson sent them on their journey Set out to explore the Louisiana Purchase and move West. Met an Indian woman named Sacagawea. Discovered the Grizzly Bear, the Prairie Dog, and over 300 different plants. Their trip took 2 years, 6 months, and 10 days.
