Unit 6- Essential Windows Skills

 Log on & off, shut down, and restart the computer  Identify elements of the OS desktop  Identify the icons used to represent drives, disks, files, and folders  Manipulate Windows  Start & run programs  Manage files  Solve file problems

1. Power On 2. POST ◦ Checks RAM, keyboard & drives 3. BIOS (ROM) searches for OS to load ◦ Location of OS is usually C: 4. OS loaded in RAM ◦ Drivers loaded 5. GUI loaded & displayed

 Select user & enter password

 Right-click ◦ Open ◦ Pin to Start Menu ◦ Pin to Desktop ◦ Send To…Desktop

 What programs are pinned on your computer?  Search for Word, Excel, or PowerPoint ◦ When the list of programs displays, right-click and select Pin to Start Menu  Search for Paint ◦ Pin it to the Start Menu ◦ Then, find it in the Pinned Area, right-click on it & unpin it

 When you click the Start button, what are the programs in the top area above the separator line? ◦ Pinned items  What is the bar that goes across the bottom of the desktop? ◦ Taskbar  Name the area with the clock & the programs running in the background. ◦ Notification area

 Usually at bottom of desktop  Peek (Aero feature)

 Right-click on Taskbar, Properties ◦ Can “Lock It” from changes ◦ Auto-hide ◦ Taskbar location ◦ Button settings

 You can move, resize, or lock the taskbar

 F1 in programs  Windows Help

 Work on more than one task at a time  Flip: Alt + Tab  Flip 3D: Windows + Tab

 Cascade- overlays w/ title bars showing  Stacked- horizontal top to bottom  Side by Side- vertical  Desktop- minimizes all windows  Open 4 programs & try

 Switch User ◦ Switch but programs still running  Log Off ◦ Closes programs & waits for log on  Lock ◦ No one else can log on  Restart  Sleep ◦ Save in RAM & less power ◦ Like pause  Hibernate (laptops) ◦ Save on HD & power down  Shut Down

 Warm Boot/Task Manager/Non- Responsive Programs ◦ Ctrl +Alt + Delete  Cold Boot ◦ Powering it off with power button ◦ Wait 30 seconds before turning back on

 Which keyboard command will cycle through open programs? ◦ Alt+Tab or Windows+Tab  Which keyboard command will allow you to end a non-responsive program or shutdown/restart a computer? ◦ Ctrl + Alt + Del  To access Help in Windows or most programs, which key would you press? ◦ F1

 Minimize, Restore Down/Maximize, Close  Window working in is ACTIVE WINDOW
