 New York  New Jersey  Pennsylvania  Delaware

1 st settled by the Dutch (it was called New Netherlands) Had an excellent harbor, fur trading, cash crops (wheat) and a good center for trade England took over without firing a shot The Duke of York allowed the people to elect a legislature (government) Diverse population

To attract settlers they offered large tracts of land, promised freedom of Religion, trial by jury, and a Representative assembly New Jersey produced large amounts of wheat

Founded by William Penn for the Quakers Penn granted colonists the right to elect representatives to the legislative assembly & gave PA a written constitution which limited the power of the government

Believed everyone deserved equal rights (including women and African Americans) Penn wrote Frames of Government which implemented democratic principles He also wrote some famous works while in prison for his religious views

Used to be the southern part of Pennsylvania

Better farmland and warmer climate than New England (mild climate)

Lumbering, mining, small scale manufacturing Cash Crops - Wheat & Grains (Bread Basket)
