Osteosarcoma  A malignant tumor of bone in which there is a proliferation of osteoblast.  A type of bone cancer

Symptoms  Swelling over a bone or bony part of the body  Pain in a bone or joint  Bones that break for no known reason

Prevalence  This cancer is most common in people between the ages of 10 and 24  Osteosarcoma affects about 900 people in the USA each year. Most people under the age of 20.

Causes  Exact cause for this disease is unknown, but can be influenced by: previous radiation, previous bone abnormalities, and genetic predisposition.  Bone cancer starts when a bone cell becomes abnormal, growing out of control and forming a lump of cancerous tissue called a tumor.

Treatments  Before a treatment option is decided for a bone cancer patient, a biopsy needs to be done.  The results of the biopsy and medical history of the patient will determine prognosis and treatment.  Four standard treatments for osteosarcoma include: surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and samarium

Interesting facts  Osteosarcoma is the most common type of bone cancer.  It can be described as localized, which means the cancer has not spread throughout the rest of the body, and is located in one or more spots that can be removed by surgery.  It can also be described as metastatic, which means the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, such as the lungs.
