“Land of Ice” Story of the week-lesson 11

nuzzled If an animal nuzzled against you, it would be rubbing you with its face or nose.

nuzzled When the weather was stormy, the mother horse nuzzled her colt with her soft face to comfort him and keep him warm. The colt must have felt very safe when his mother nuzzled her face against him. Have you ever had a pet nuzzle against you? How did it make you feel?

nuzzled Name an animal that you would like to nuzzle you. Do you think a person can nuzzle? How? Would an animal who nuzzled you be friendly or not friendly? Why do you think so?

pranced If you pranced around, you would be walking in a bouncy, springy way, like a horse.

pranced When the colt had finished eating at the seashore, he pranced in the waves and chased the gulls. The colt was happy and excited as he pranced. He was having a good time. Have you ever pranced around when you were having fun? Tell about it.

pranced Would your family be happy if you pranced in the living room? Why or why not? What might cause you to prance around the room? Name some places where you should not prance.

raging When something is raging, it is happening in a strong or out-of-control way.

raging In winter, a strong wind blew. There was a raging blizzard. I remember a raging storm with thunder, lightning and very strong winds. Do you remember a raging storm? What did it sound like? How did it make you feel?

raging Would you be able to sleep well if a storm were raging outside? Why or why not? What are some things other than the weather that could be raging? Tell what the ocean might look like if it were raging.

adapt If an animal or thing adapts to a place, it has body parts or ways of acting that help it live there.

adapt The thick fat and fur help the seal adapt to the cold, icy land. I use a heavy coat to help me adapt to cold weather, or live comfortably in it. What else do we use to help us adapt to cold weather?

adapt What would you do to adapt to living on a boat? How would you adapt to living in a cave? How would you adapt if you lived in a place that had lots of rain?

intriguing If you think that something is intriguing, you are curious about it and very interested in it.

intriguing Animals that live in the land of ice are intriguing to read about. I think penguins are the most intriguing because they are birds that swim instead of fly. Which animal do you think is the most intriguing? Why?

intriguing Do you think that bugs or penguins are more intriguing? Why? What would your face and body look like if you were looking at something intriguing? What movies have you seen that were intriguing?

inhabit If you inhabit a place, you live there.

inhabit The penguins, seals and fish all inhabit the land of ice. I’m glad I do not inhabit a place that is so cold. It would be hard to live there and to go to school. Would you like to inhabit this place? Why or why not?

inhabit Would you like to inhabit a house with no roof? Why or why not? Would you like to inhabit a world made out of food? Why or why not? What would it be like to inhabit the moon?

Let’s recap… and review what we learned.

Fill in the blanks with the correct word. adapt inhabit raging We decided to stay inside because of the __________ storm. Since I moved to the new city, I had to ___________ to the warmer weather.

nuzzled pranced inhabit My sister ___________ around the room as she showed us her new shoes. Last night, my cat and I ___________ close to each other while we relaxed on the couch watching TV.

inhabit intriguing raging There are many places I like to ___________, but a cold cave is not one of them. I find it _____________ that a rainbow is made of tiny drops of water and sunshine.
