Synchronization Vs. Integration

Integration through Mobile, Wireless, and Pervasive Computing Presentationto ITM 731 February 17, 2005 Presenter: Tom McGoogan

Integration and Pervasive Computing? Integration and Context Aware Environments??  Terms are not synonymous –Integration- Data integration is taking information from multiple sources and providing a uniform interface to access all of these data. The data sources to be integrated may belong to the same enterprise or may be arbitrary sources on the web (Source: Bitpipe Online Dictionary) –Context Awareness – Capturing a broad range of contextual attributes to better understand what a customer needs, and what products or services he or she might possibly be interested in (Source: Turban) Ex: Carnegie Mellon University Ex: Carnegie Mellon University –Pervasive Computing – Invisible, everywhere computing that is embedded in the objects around us. (Source: Turban) Ex: Elite Care Ex: Elite Care

Carnegie Mellon – Context Aware Environment

Carnegie Mellon – Case #1  Carnegie Mellon University – A private research university located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Formed in 1967 by the union of the Carnegie Institute of Technology founded in 1900 and the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research, founded in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania1967Carnegie Institute of Technology1900Mellon Institute of Industrial Research1917 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania1967Carnegie Institute of Technology1900Mellon Institute of Industrial Research1917 –CMU houses the first computer science school and the first drama school in the nation. It also houses one of the best engineering schools, and its business school is consistently ranked among the best in the nation. –CMU is famous for its unique interdisciplinary environment and as an innovative leader in education. –  Goal: Maintain competitive edge as forward edge technology innovator in university education –Demonstrate thought leadership in mobile computing applications –Retain and increase DARPA & DoD funding for projects, e.g. National Technical Alliance & National Robotics Engineering Consortium

Carnegie Mellon – Case #1  Discussion Questions –Does the usefulness of their service justify the need to disclose private preferences? –Can such a system be developed for consumers who are not members of a defined community – such as a university? –What do you think of the notion of “everywhere computing”? –Discuss pros & cons of location based tools.

Elite Care (Elder Care) – Case #2  Founded in Milwaukee, Oregon in – –Wired and wireless facility (out to 30 miles) consists of network of bio-sensors, movement sensors, panic buttons, direct Internet access, video-conferencing, and climate, and light controls –Advisory committee includes: Mayo Clinic, Harvard University, University of Michigan, University of Wisconsin, and Sandia National Laboratory –Elite Care is centered around Oatfield Estates, an elder-care facility with 120 one- bedroom suites located in a Portland, Ore. suburb. Elite Care’s computer network is linked to devices that track the resident's whereabouts (important for Alzheimer's patients), alert caregivers in the event that a resident falls, monitor weight and temperature, and even cross-reference their life experiences to help jump-start friendships. Elite Care’s computer network is linked to devices that track the resident's whereabouts (important for Alzheimer's patients), alert caregivers in the event that a resident falls, monitor weight and temperature, and even cross-reference their life experiences to help jump-start friendships.  Corporate Goal: –Elite Care Mission: To fundamentally change and improve housing and health care for elderly people –Elite Care also demonstrates the utility of advanced pervasive computing to improve care facilities’ individual and group monitoring and staff assistance capabilities.

Elite Care (Elder Care) – Case #2; Continued  Elite Care is guided by five basic principles: –Family-style Interactions – Elite Care Staff assume roles as "fictive kin“ because they live in the same home as residents. Meals prepared in the home's country kitchen further enhance opportunities for family-style socialization. –Role Continuity - Residents maintain level of autonomy depending on their abilities. –Life Engagement – Residents are given inputs on how to spend the household budget. Residents continue to make meaningful decisions and exert control over their surroundings. –Residential Design - Private resident rooms open onto large common spaces such as the kitchen, activity room, and great room. –Neighborhood Focus - Facilities are in established suburban neighborhoods where residents can benefit from the natural environment and interaction with the community.  Elite Care Philosophy: –Power, Language, Competence, Context, Development, Spirituality, & Choice --All Matter to Senior Residents

Elite Care (Elder Care) – Case #2  Elite Care Discussion Questions: –What types of data do these pervasive computing devices provide? –How can pervasive computing increase the quality of elder care? –What about privacy issues? (Pervasive or Invasive) –How can wireless devices help people with disabilities?

Summary  Integration is not the same as either Pervasive Computing or Context Aware Applications  Privacy Vs. Pervasive Computing Context Awareness  Key Questions: –What are some additional applications of Pervasive Computing or Context Awareness that you can think of? –Which will gain greatest market acceptance? Why? –Will individual privacy ever make a comeback?
