Lesson Plan in Mathematics - I Subtraction of 2 – digit numbers with regrouping. Prepared by: Arlene V. Lagundino

Overview In this lesson, the pupils will do subtraction with regrouping correctly of a given word problem.

Subject: Mathematics - I Topic: Subtraction: Subtraction of 2 –digit numbers with regrouping. Time: 6o minutes Period of Teaching: 1 day

Objectives Subtract 2 – digit numbers with regrouping. At the end of the lesson, the pupils will be able to: Subtract 2 – digit numbers with regrouping. Work cooperatively.

Materials/ Teaching Aids Power Point Counters Blocks/ base ten Worksheets Workmat/ Number Cards

Preparation Prepare the base ten block and the place value chart for demonstration of subtracting less number from the place value of ones and tens.

Prerequisite Skills & Concept The children should proficient in identifying the place value of a number and also had practice the concept of subtraction.

Procedures Begin the lesson with a video from youtube: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/10432729 The video will help or recaps pupil’s knowledge about subtraction with 2–digit numbers without regrouping.

2. Introduce the lesson by watching the video and the slides in the Powerpoint. http://www.mathplayground.com/howto_regroupI.html http://www.athens.edu/pt3/vinson/subtraction_r.ppt

3. Teach also a rhymes for them to remember the process in subtraction. More on top? No need to stop. More on the floor? Go next door, Get ten more. Numbers the same? Zero's the game.

Look at the numbers in the one's column and ask: Do an example as shown below to demonstrate what each stanza of the rhyme means. Example 1: Look at the numbers in the one's column and ask: More on top?  36 No need to stop. 22   14

Look at the numbers in the one's column and ask: Example 2: Look at the numbers in the one's column and ask: More on the floor? 42  Go next door,        -26 Get ten more. 16

Look at the numbers in the one's column and ask: Example 3: Look at the numbers in the one's column and ask: Numbers the same?  35  Zero's the game.  -15    20

4. Observe students at work. Do they do problems correctly 4. Observe students at work. Do they do problems correctly? So they recite rhyme to help them do the problems.

5. Group work: Pupils will get into group of 5 5. Group work: Pupils will get into group of 5. Each group will be given: A word problem to solve. Each group will report their answer and show the illustration of their answer.

Assessment Answer the worksheet: http://www.superteacherworksheets.com/subtraction/mystery-picture-subtraction.pdf http://www.superteacherworksheets.com/subtraction/mysterypicture-subtraction-fish.pdf

The teacher will use a checklist to assess the guided and independent practice activities.  The checklist will have objectives listed as column headings.  Checks and minuses will be used to determine attainment.

For enrichment, the teacher will increase the numbers and add regrouping.  For remediation, the teacher will let the students continue working out problems using the manipulative while working in groups.
