1 Subtraction

2 UEQ Compare and contrast the four main operations performed with numbers.

3 LEQ What are the key words for subtraction.
Explain the concept behind subtraction.

4 Subtraction Subtraction means to take one amount from another amount to get a smaller total amount. When numbers are subtracted, the end result is a smaller number.

5 Vocabulary Difference: the answer in a subtraction problem
Minus: the symbol/ sign for subtraction

6 Inverse Subtraction is the inverse, or opposite of addition.
Therefore, addition and subtraction facts create fact families. You can use addition to check subtraction problems.

7 Drill See how many basic subtraction facts you already know by heart by completing this 5-minute drill. We are going to chart our progress with this drill each day. Do not start until the timer starts.

8 Subtraction Shortcut Touch Math

9 Touch Math You can use Touch Math to subtract numbers quickly without using your fingers. In touch math, only the smallest number gets touch points. To subtract, you count backwards from the large number, touching all points on the smaller number.

10 Practice Use your touch points to add these problems together quickly.
5-1= 7-3= 4-2= 3-3= 8-1= 7-6= 9-4= 6-0= 9-2= 5-5= 8-3= 9-6=

14 Drill See how many basic subtraction facts you already know by heart by completing this 5-minute drill. We are going to chart our progress with this drill each day. Do not start until the timer starts.

15 Multiple Digit Subtraction Without Regrouping
Remember that “regrouping” means that we are going to be borrowing from our neighbor. Today, we are going to have big problems, but you are NOT going to have to regroup.

19 Day 3

20 Regrouping Regrouping is the correct way of saying “borrowing.”
We borrow/regroup when the top number in a subtraction problem is smaller than the bottom number. In other words, it is not enough.

21 Subtraction with Regrouping
Step 1: Line up your numbers. Step 2: Subtract the ones column. Step 3: If the ones column cannot be subtracted, borrow one ten from the tens place. Step 4: Add the one ten to the ones place and subtract.

22 Borrowing When 2 Columns are 2-Digit Numbers
Step 1: Line up your numbers. Step 2: Subtract the ones column. Step 3: If the ones column cannot be subtracted, borrow one ten from the tens place and add to the ones place. Step 4: Subtract the tens column. If the tens column cannot be subtracted, borrow one hundred from the hundreds place and ass to the tens place. Step 5: Subtract the hundreds column.

36 Subtraction with Zeros
Step 1: If the numbers below the zeros are bigger than the zero, you will have to borrow. To borrow, you must go over until you are at a number other then zero. Step 2: Borrow one from your number, add to the next zero to make 10. Step 3: Borrow one from the 10 (it becomes 9) and add it to the next 0 to make another 10. Step 4: Subtract to find the difference.

37 Subtraction (Regrouping) with Zeros

38 Game! Answer each subtraction problem to become a millionaire. If you get an answer wrong, the game is over.
