About grading system  In the past There is no room for students to argue their grades.  In the contemporary Students can ask to rise their grades

What’s the problem?  Professors want students to be happy so they give them higher and higher grades. Therefore, students are happy and then professors are also happy.  Happy students make happy professor !?

Why grades go up  The history of grades that change all the time how grades change throughout the time  Grades always go up; only the stories change  Schools or faculty try their best to adjust the standards of grades and communicate with professors or replace old fashioned ways to record grades with new ones...  It may seem effective at first but the situation deteriorates in a short time. But they totally failed

Making the grades  The author thinks that students regard grade as a kind of merchandise to some extent.  Just like buying a thing, you can change it if you don’t like the grades you own.  Students no longer consider the grades as the results of their academic effort and performance.  Students who would rather get a free pass than accomplish their goals and finish their education with hard work.

After reading two articles  Some professors want to have happy students and give high grades without thinking if this student deserves such a beautiful grade.  Some students even have wrong concept that grades can be made so they behave like disgruntled consumers just like the essay describing.

Look back to Taiwan’s universities  Heavy reliance on grades  Not only students but also parents all consider high grades as a short cut to success so they use anyway to obtain a good grade.  Ethic crisis  Professors should require students strictly and have some lazy students flunk to let them have an opportunity of reflection about their attitude on their own duty.

Anyway, we still want to pass this class please

A Canadian college student’s point of view.  We interview Sanford Tsai.  There is no “attendance grade”. Students are not forced to attend classes but they have to bear the consequence of missed lectures.  He feels that Taiwan university students should not be baby-sitted by the professors.

Professor Lee Chia-tung’s perspective  Grading system still has plenty of problems.  Because there are no other systems better than grading system, it is inevitable to choose grades as judgment of students’ performance.  We should not overemphasize grades but students’ potential and talent.

Student’s perspective  We interviewed four classmates.  We can find absolutely different thoughts toward “grading system” and “things behind grades”.

Attendance is important...  Some think “attendance grade” should be considered in the final grades.  students who pay entirely attention to class and are full attendant should be more concerned

Attendance is wasting time...  Some think that attendance grade should not be listed in the report cards.  In their opinions, it is reasonable to skip the class which you have already studied. If student attends it, he will just waste time.

Grading system is good now...  Some still think we doesn’t need any change. They claim that grading system is fair now.

Things behind the grades  Some think that might be how much interest they have toward the subject.  Other students said that grades are not only show their efforts but also can give them studying motives.

Our opinion  Though people know the seriousness of rising grades, they never change.  Students should be responsible for their own pass or failure of any course.  If the students graduate from school without learning certain specialties, they will inevitably confront failure.  We believe that after their failure, they would be more willing to work harder to achieve their goal just for satisfaction. Then they will start to regret their thought of education.

What should we do?  Making great effort for subjects you are majoring in.  Master of the abilities that textbooks can’t teach you such as the ability of communicating with others especially in foreign languages, the ability of dealing with emergencies or dilemmas, etc.

Can high grades buy happiness?

 High grades maybe make students and professors happy now. Nevertheless, if students realize they are not so good in the future, they will not be happy at all.

It is not how high grades you got but how much knowledge and abilities you got that counts.
